Who is the 2024 Ohio State signee? Aaron Scott offers and means a lot to the cornerback position

It takes but just one look at Aaron Scott to see why the Buckeyes wanted, and needed, to get him in the 2024 class.

Scott is 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, offering ideal size and length to play cornerback at a high level. He’s got good speed and great technique, and perhaps just as importantly, he played his high school football in Ohio.

“Aaron was a huge addition for us,” coach Ryan Day said after Scott signed. “(Cornerbacks coach) Tim Walton did a great job recruiting Aaron — and he had a great season this year. He played quarterback when he needed to, they started off kind of rocky this year, and then they brought their team all the way to the state finals. Big time player out of the state of Ohio that’s going to be a big part of our future.”

Scott, the No. 34 overall player, the No. 2 cornerback and No. 1 player in Ohio in the 2024 class chose the Buckeyes over strong pushes from Oregon, and notably, Michigan.

Keeping the Springfield-native with the Buckeyes was paramount, considering not just the type of talent he is, but where they prevented him from going, too.

“You have to win those battles,” Day said. “Aaron and his family were awesome — were great in the process. They’re huge supporters of Aaron, the whole coaching staff, and guys know when you’re from the state of Ohio, the best players play at Ohio State. They know what it means to be a Buckeye in the state of Ohio, and the opportunities, and what it could mean for them for the rest of their life. Aaron understood that.”

His commitment continued a remarkable trend at cornerback for Ohio State over the last few cycles, especially since Walton arrived with the team.

Scott was one of three commitments in the class, along with Bryce West (No. 58) and Miles Lockhart (No. 388). The 2023 class was loaded too, as Ohio State signed Jermaine Mathews Jr. (No. 51) and Calvin Simpson-Hunt (No. 62). The 2025 class already has four-star Blake Woodby (No. 76) and could add five-star Devin Sanchez (No. 6) over the weekend, too.

But Scott’s addition to the class was another in a now-growing line of elite cornerback commitments, and paired with the fact that Scott is an in-state product, it shaped up to be everything Ohio State wants, and needs, in its recruiting classes.

“Tim has done a great job identifying talent early on and then building relationships and going from there,” Day said. “You’re seeing the way that our corners are playing, I think that’s a big part of the recruiting process, seeing it on the field. Aaron Scott was somebody who came to camp early on, and it was a hot day out there, and he grinded.

He went for I think an hour, and just everything we threw at him as a young player — he had a broken wrist — he kept working. We could tell there was a toughness there, there was a grit there, and he wanted to earn that scholarship — and he did that day.”
