Welcome News: Kevi Walters returns to Brisbane Broncos for the first time after bitter exit for official….

Kevin Walters has returned to Red Hill for the first time since his bitter exit from Brisbane late last year.

The former coach was axed after a tumultuous campaign in 2024 that resulted in the Broncos missing out on the finals.

The 12th placed finish was a far cry from their results the previous year when they came within a whisker of halting Penrith’s premiership dynasty in an epic grand final.

Michael Maguire was plucked from the New South Wales set-up to try and right the ship, with Walters left disheartened by his exit.

The ties were severed after a club-wide review was carried out in the wake of the Broncos’ rapid decline.

However, the players were reportedly blindsided by the decision before Walters opened up on the shotgun nature of his departure earlier this year.

“I had a gut feeling that things weren’t quite right,” Walters revealed while appearing on his podcast Inside Ball.

“I was shocked [that I was sacked] because we were a long way down the track for planning for 2025.

“It’s a decision they made and I’ve accepted that. At first, I was thinking, ‘Why this’ and ‘Why that’ but I’ve accepted it now.

“They decided that Maguire was the right guy and that I couldn’t take them to the land where they wanted to get to. I’ve got no problems with that, that’s their decision and we’ve got to live with it.”

Walters has now returned to the club for the first time while presenting his son, Billy, his jersey for his 100th game in the NRL.

The utility debuted for Melbourne in 2019 before playing 10 matches for the Wests Tigers during a two-year spell.

He has since spent four fruitful years at the Broncos where he has registered the vast majority of his appearances.

“I have known him for four or five years now and to see a player play 100 games is pretty special,” Maguire said.

“Kevvie came in and spoke really well.

“It was nice to see a father and son together which was really special.”
