Jordan Walsh made his goal of the first Celtics’ points a reality, along with seven…..
The Celtics are just days away from the NBA’s trade deadline Thursday, meaning there’s going to be a lot of rumors and posturing over the next few days. While the C’s aren’t expected to make a big, splashy move, they are expected to make a depth trade to shore up their bench ahead of the playoffs.
That’s partly why none of the names are true needle-movers, instead providing insurance options should the Celtics need to turn to them. Add three more veteran names to that trade list: Bulls big Andre Drummond, Jazz big Kelly Olynyk and Wizards guard Delon Wright, per HoopHype’s Michael Scotto.
Scotto also reported the C’s are looking to package together their minimum-deal contracts and draft assets to land a depth piece. That’s not too surprising considering the Celtics are unlikely to trade from their rotation as they have the best record in the league. The C’s also have the $6.2 million Grant Williams traded player exception, so that’s also another avenue where they can bring in a player.
Interestingly, each of them bring some different value in any potential trade. Olynyk, the former Celtic, would be a great floor-spacer as he’s knocking down 42.9% of his 3-pointers this season. For a depth big man, he would be a great insurance option — and potentially another playoff weapon.
While Drummond has made a couple All-Star teams in his career, he’s a backup big man at this point in his career. He’s averaging 7.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game coming off the bench for the Bulls. Wright would also be another piece for guard depth as he hasn’t played too much for the Wizards. At 6-foot-5, he has some size and shot 37.1% on his 3s this season. But he wouldn’t be traded for to change the Celtics but instead to complement the rest of the roster.
