Breaking: 76ers Lands an All-Star for a four-year, $114 million Contract in Latest NBA Trade
As the NBA trade deadline nears, the Philadelphia 76ers have about a month to make final upgrades to the roster before the playoff push. A recent mock trade has them adding a former All-Star to the duo of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
The people at Bleacher Report put together trades of all the top players surfacing in rumors. For Dejounte Murray, they had him going to Philly in exchange for Robert Covington, Jaden Springer, Danuel House, and a pair of first-round picks.
Since the James Harden trade, the Sixers have been connected to multiple players. OG Anunoby was a key name but was recently traded to the New York Knicks. Reports emerged last week that the Sixers have checked in on Murray, but he might not be at the top of their list.
Parting with two first-round picks is tough, but this could still be seen as a solid overall deal for the Sixers. Jaden Springer has no path to consistent playing time, and the roster is loaded up on the wing. Shipping out Covington also opens up opportunities for Marcus Morris, who has performed well as of late.
Playing alongside Trae Young, Murray has proved he can be effective on and off the ball. In 35 games this season, he is averaging 20.9 PPG, 4.6 RPG, and 5.0 APG. Murray has also been an effective floor spacer, knocking down 38% of his attempts on good volume.
As a two-way player, Murray fits the archetype of a player the Sixers want to put around Embiid and Maxey. However, there is one thing that might deter Daryl Morey from pursuing this move. That being Murray’s contract. Next season, Murray will begin a four-year, $114 million contract.
Given that the team is going to have a sizable amount of cap space this summer, they might not want to bring in a player who will impact their future financial flexibility. The Sixers will get an up-close look at Murray this week as they are slated to face the Hawks on Wednesday.
