76ers News: Sixers Guard Ranked Among Top Young Stars in the NBA

Sixers guard finds himself near the top of “top 25 under 25” rankings.

This season, Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is emerging into an All-Star-level talent. His play through the first few months of the season has him ranked among the top young stars in the league today.

Every year, the people at HoopsHype put together a list of the top 25 players under the age of 25. In this year’s rankings, Maxey finds himself in the top five. The Sixers rising star comes in at No. 5, one spot ahead of Rookie of the Year frontrunner Chet Holmgren.

“Maxey has been a huge reason why the 76ers haven’t skipped a beat in 2023-24, sitting at 23-12 and third in the Eastern Conference as we approach the All-Star break, festivities that we fully expect Maxey to take part in for the first time in his career.”

Ahead of Maxey on this list are Ja Morant, Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Edwards, and Luka Doncic. Other notable names in the top ten include Scottie Barnes and Paolo Banchero.

With James Harden traded to the LA Clippers, Maxey entered the year as the No. 2 option behind Joel Embiid. He has taken this opportunity in stride as he continues to put up stellar numbers. This season, Maxey is averaging 26.1 PPG, 3.7 RPG, and 6.6 APG.

Outside of a few off nights, Maxey has consistently played at a high level for the Sixers. Even on nights when Joel Embiid is out of the lineup, he’s managed to step up and deliver some big outings. Last week, he came close to a triple-double (35 points, eight rebounds, nine assists) in an overtime matchup with the Atlanta Hawks.

As Maxey fights for the first All-Star nomination of his young career, he is well deserving of being near the top of these rankings.

76ers: Tyrese Maxey’s Take on Former Teammate Landing With Raptors

Philadelphia 76ers From college teammates to direct rivals in the NBA, Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey and former New York Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley remain on-court foes at the pro level even after the latter player was traded last week.

After spending his first four NBA seasons as a member of the Knicks, Quickley was dealt to the Toronto Raptors in the trade that landed the Knicks OG Anunoby.

Now, he plays for a different division rival of the Sixers’. Will Quickley stick around in the Atlantic beyond this summer? That’s one of the biggest questions surrounding the Raptors. Currently, Quickley is playing on a team option and will become a restricted free agent in 2024.

There will be an opportunity for Quickley to explore deals in free agency next summer. If he lands an offer from another interested team, the Raptors have an opportunity to match. It’s been reported in the past that Quickley is hoping to see a significant payday during his first free agency.

His former Kentucky teammate Tyrese Maxey recently instilled confidence in the idea that Quickley is going to get the contract he desires this summer. “I’m pretty sure [Quickley] will be OK,” Maxey told the New York Post this week. “He’ll make a lot of money.” As far as Maxey’s view on Quickley’s new landing spot, the potential first-time All-Star expressed happiness for his fellow draft classmate.

“I was happy for him,” Maxey continued via the Post. “He’s over there, he’s starting, he’s having a good time. I think he’ll get a little bit more of an opportunity. I’m happy for him. I’m sad that I don’t get to play against him [on Friday]. But I’m happy for him.

” From the start of his run with the Knicks, Quickley had a role in New York. While he rarely started, picking up just 27 appearances in the starting five across four seasons, Quickley averaged 24 minutes on the floor. Since he was acquired by the Raptors, Quickley immediately saw a bump with his role. An opportunity to start in his first three games called for an opportunity to earn additional minutes.

Appearing on the court for 33 minutes per night so far, Quickley has averaged 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists while knocking down 44 percent of his threes.

As long as he can maintain that level of play for the remainder of the 2023-2024 NBA season, Quickley could certainly see his desired payday, as Maxey predicts. As far as the Sixers guard’s disappointment in not seeing Quickley at all through the first stretch of the season, he’ll have to wait until March 31, when the 76ers pay their final visit to Toronto this year.
