Brisbane will look to recover from a nightmare campaign as Michael Maguire steps into the hot seat at Red Hill.

The Broncos entered into the 2024 season as one of the premiership favourites under Kevin Walters after going agonisingly close to ending Penrith’s dominance in the decider.

However, the club was unable to repeat their heroics from the previous year as things quickly spiralled out of control before Walters was eventually removed from his post at the end go the season.

Maguire has a host of talent at his disposal including Reece Walsh, Selwyn Cobbo and Payne Haas, but will need to get them out on the field consistently if the Broncos are to be a title contender once again.

The Sporting News takes a look at the Brisbane Broncos’ 2025 NRL draw below.

Inside the stunning post-Origin axing that green-lighted Coates’ Broncos escape to Storm

For Xavier Coates, getting “away from the spotlight of Brisbane” was the best thing he’s done for his career.

“The best option for myself was to come down to Melbourne where rugby league was pretty foreign, I could get away from the spotlight of Brisbane and that Queensland sort of area where rugby league is massive,” Coates, who joined the Storm for the 2022 season, told Fox League’s Face to Face.

“I felt like if I got away from that, and just focused on myself and improving myself on and off the field, I’d be a better player and be more consistent.”

The battle for Coates between the Broncos and Storm began after watching him play in the Under 16’s grand final for the Currumbin Eagles. Coates recalls the moment his father told him that Brisbane were looking to scout the young winger.

“After the game, dad come over to me and said to me that the Broncos are interested in offering a bit of a, sort of like a scholarship thing, to go up there and train and learn off a few people.”

In high demand, both teams had put Coates under their wing, helping him gain exposure and experience at the higher level.

“Yeah, so it was a little bit of the Broncos and the Storm at the time,” he said.

“So I’d done a little bit of the academy. Storm Academy was at East Tigers … would have been three or four sessions, I think I did with them. And then they offered me a scholarship to come to Geelong camp for a week and to come down and do a bit of training, and then to watch the NRL squad train.”

But with Coates being 17 at the time, staying close to home was still a big priority.

“I sort of wanted to stick up close to home and stay close to family, and I thought that was the best thing for myself at the time, and ended up taking that opportunity with the Broncos.”

Xavier Coates in action for the Broncos in June 2020. It was a historic season in Brisbane for all the wrong reasons.

Signing with Brisbane in 2019, Coates rallied with the Broncos through record-breaking losses and a first wooden spoon for the club in 2020.

“It makes me more grateful to sort of win NRL games. And it was really difficult period, that time,” he said.

“The squad had things going on. There was stuff going on everywhere. And I sort of thought to myself, ‘Is this what the sort of NRL is all about?’”

Copping most of the backlash over their season was coach Anthony Seibold, ultimately sacked by the Broncos; yet Coates still speaks highly of his former mentor.

“Anthony has played a massive role in my development. He’d done so much work with me, bringing me in early mornings, investing so much time into the young sort of people coming through.

“I remember sitting in his office, and he used to go through heaps and heaps of clips that he cut up of me and clips of other players. He used to actually get us to go cut up other clips of other NRL players that we sort of wanted to play like, or wanted to be like.

“And I remember cutting up clips of Daniel Tupou and him underneath the high ball. Him jumping up for balls, him with his backfield carries.
