According to New York Post’s Jon Heyman, Steve Cohens, the owner of the New York Mets wanted to “humanise” his meeting with Pete Alonso. Steve Cohen said, “I wanted to humanize the negotiations. I wanted him to hear it straight from me — two humans having a real conversation — I was clear. I told him, I want you back. We want you back.”
This statement by Steve Cohen truly shocked fans. The reason for this is, that just a few weeks ago, at the Amazin’ Day event, Steve Cohen appeared pretty frustrated with Pete Alonso’s contract negotiation process. Steve Cohen also expressed that he is “exhausted” with the negotiating process for Pete Alonso and found it much “easier” to negotiate with Juan Soto, who signed the largest contract ever in the history of professional sports with the New York Mets.

While fans are happy that Pete Alonso has decided to go back to the New York Mets after initially turning them down, many believe New York Mets made Pete rejoin the team “on their own terms”.
A fan took to X and wrote, “We want you back, but we want you to play for peanuts, b/c the class war is over and quite frankly your side lost. Now if you’ll excuse me I need to go home and cook dinner for Juan Soto’s mom”, while another fan wrote, “Real loud and clear we don’t want you.”
But some fans also feel that the way Steve Cohen reached out to Pete Alonso, speaks a lot about how much he cares about his team. A fan wrote, “What a great owner he did not have to do that. He went out of his way to make him feel like he was wanted. So glad it finally got done.”
Many fans are waiting for an official statement for Pete Alonso or his sports agent, Scott Boras, about his $54 million deal with his former team, the New York Mets. But both Pete and Scott have remained silent and it seems like Pete Alonso will only be spotted next when the Spring Training begins.
