The 2025 season could get off to a rocky start for the New York Mets, as they’ve lost one of Juan Soto’s key teammates just eight days before the new MLB season begins.
The New York Mets received a major setback as catcher Francisco Alvarez is set to undergo surgery on his fractured left hamate bone, sidelining him for 6-8 weeks. This injury comes just days before the 2025 season opener, leaving the Mets without a key piece of their lineup. Juan Soto, who joined the team in a blockbuster deal, will now miss a crucial teammate for the early part of the season.
Alvarez suffered the injury during live batting practice, manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed. The young catcher was expected to play an integral role in the Mets’ offense but will now focus on recovery. The absence of Alvarez is a blow, as he was seen as a key figure behind the plate and in the batter’s box.
This marks the second straight season that Alvarez has suffered an early-season hand injury. Last year, he missed over seven weeks with a torn thumb ligament. Despite returning in mid-June, his offensive production was inconsistent, and the Mets are hoping this setback doesn’t further impact his development.
With Alvarez sidelined, the Mets now turn to Luis Torrens as their primary catcher. Torrens, who joined the team last May, showed promise early but struggled offensively late in the season. While serviceable, he doesn’t provide the same level of impact Alvarez does both offensively and defensively.
Mets Face Depth Challenge at Catcher
The Mets are likely to explore external options to strengthen their catching depth. The free-agent market still includes experienced names like James McCann and Yasmani Grandal, while the team could also look at potential trades before Opening Day. Internal candidates, such as Jakson Reetz, lack significant MLB experience.
This injury adds to the Mets’ growing list of spring training setbacks, including injuries to pitchers Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas. While Alvarez’s recovery timeline is relatively short, the Mets must find a solution quickly to avoid early struggles in a season where Juan Soto and company have high expectations.
