The month of May has been a busy time for Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers.
Now that spring ball has wrapped up, a ton of time and energy from Cignetti and his staff is being utilized on the recruiting trail. Indiana landed a pair of commitments over the weekend, but suffered a tough recruiting blow on Monday.
4-star CB Monsanna Torbert Jr. decommits from Indiana
On Monday afternoon, Hoosier fans were delivered some bad news as 4-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert Jr. abandoned his commitment to Indiana. The 5-10, 160-pound prospect from the class of 2027 originally committed to Cignetti and the Hoosiers back on January 10. But he has now decided to open his recruitment back up.
Torbert was Indiana’s highest-ranked recruit in its 2027 recruiting class. According to the 247Sports Composite, the Cincinnati native is ranked as the No. 6 overall player in the state of Ohio and the No. 16 cornerback in the country. Nationally, Torbert comes in as the No. 139 overall prospect among all players.
His decommitment now leaves Indiana’s 2027 recruiting class with five players. The new highest-ranked player in the group is 4-star OT Mason McDermott, who is ranked as the No. 22 offensive lineman and No. 271 overall player according to On3.
Torbert is the second decommitment from Indiana’s 2027 class
Unfortunately, this situation isn’t new to Hoosier football fans, as Torbert isn’t the first player to decommit from the Hoosiers this offseason.
In March, 4-star WR Ja’Hyde Brown decommitted from Indiana. At the time of his decommitment, Brown was ranked as the No. 7 overall player in the state of Kentucky and the No. 49 wide receiver in the country for the 2027 class according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. Like Torbert, Hyde also committed to the Hoosiers on January 10, but both will now be playing college football in somewhere other than Bloomington next season.
Shortly after his decommitment, Brown, a Louisville native, pledged a new commitment to the Louisville Cardinals. Torbert hails from Cincinnati, and the Cincinnati Bearcats appear to be back firmly in the mix. Thus, it wouldn’t be surprising to see another former Hoosier commit go back to their hometown team. But only time will tell.
Along with Indiana, Torbert’s original finalists were Cincinnati, Iowa, Maryland, and Pitt. It seems likely that all of those teams now try to make another strong push for Torbert’s services.
Indiana fans still have immense trust in Curt Cignetti after Monsanna Torbert decommitment
Losing Torbert is a tough blow, but it’s not the end of the world for Indiana football recruiting. Cignetti has shown that he can put a championship caliber team on the field with a roster that doesn’t have much — if any — blue chip recruits.
Over his two seasons in Bloomington, Cignetti has proved that he has a keen eye for talent, a successful method in place to develop that talent, and an effective system for putting those players in the best positions to succeed.
That process resulted in a historic National Championship season last year, and it gives Indiana fans plenty of confidence in his process moving forward.
