In a gesture that cements his legacy as one of the greatest players in club history, the Melbourne Demons have officially announced plans to honour captain Max Gawn with a life-sized statue outside the MCG, celebrating his extraordinary career, leadership, and lifelong contribution to Australian Rules Football.
The announcement, made by Melbourne CEO Gary Pert during a special ceremony at AAMI Park, drew thunderous applause from teammates, fans, and AFL officials. The statue, set to be unveiled in early 2026, will stand as a tribute to Gawn’s remarkable achievements — from his Premiership-winning leadership in 2021 to his multiple All-Australian selections and Keith “Bluey” Truscott Trophy wins.
“Max Gawn isn’t just a footballer — he’s an institution,” Pert said proudly. “His influence on this club, on and off the field, will be remembered for generations. This statue represents not only his achievements, but the spirit of resilience, humility, and excellence that defines the Melbourne Football Club.”
The bronze sculpture will depict Gawn in one of his most iconic poses — fist raised after a dominant ruck contest, beard flowing, eyes locked in focus — symbolizing the power and passion that made him one of the AFL’s most respected figures.
Gawn, visibly moved by the announcement, admitted he was “overwhelmed and deeply humbled.”
“To even think about having a statue is surreal,” he said. “I’ve always just wanted to give everything I have for the red and blue. I love this club, I love my teammates, and I’m grateful to have lived my dream surrounded by incredible people.”
Throughout his career, Gawn has been the beating heart of the Demons — a six-time All-Australian, a five-time club best and fairest, and the captain who ended Melbourne’s 57-year premiership drought. His leadership, both emotional and tactical, has been praised across the AFL, with teammates often describing him as “a gentle giant with a warrior’s spirit.”
Midfielder Christian Petracca shared an emotional tribute, saying,
“Max changed the culture here. He believed in us when the world didn’t. He made every player feel like they belonged. You can’t replace a leader like that.”
The statue project will be funded jointly by the Melbourne Football Club, AFL Victoria, and contributions from fans. Already, thousands have donated to the “Immortal Max Fund,” launched moments after the announcement. Plans include a digital plaque at the statue’s base, where visitors can scan a QR code to watch highlights from Gawn’s career, hear stories from teammates, and listen to his personal reflections.
AFL CEO Andrew Dillon called the move “a fitting tribute to one of the game’s true giants,” noting that Gawn’s influence extended well beyond football.
“Max has always stood for more than sport — he represents integrity, mental strength, and connection. His leadership set a standard that inspired the entire league.”
Gawn’s impact has also been felt through his community initiatives. Off the field, he has been an advocate for mental health awareness, youth mentorship, and sustainability projects across Victoria. In 2023, he co-founded the Kickstart Program, which provides sporting equipment and training opportunities for underprivileged children across rural communities.
As Melbourne fans gathered outside the MCG upon hearing the news, many described Gawn as the “soul of the Demons.” One long-time supporter, wearing a No. 11 guernsey, said through tears,
“He gave us belief again. That 2021 flag wasn’t just a win — it was healing for every fan who waited their whole life. This statue is more than deserved.”
The unveiling ceremony, scheduled for March 2026, is expected to draw thousands, including past club legends and AFL greats. A special commemorative jersey, featuring a gold-etched silhouette of Gawn’s statue, will be worn by Melbourne players in Round 1 of the 2026 season.
As for Gawn himself, he insists he’s not thinking about legacies or monuments — just the team.
“The real reward is seeing the club thriving. If this statue reminds young players what passion and hard work can do, then that’s the best honour I could ask for.”
For Melbourne fans, however, the statue will be far more than a reminder. It will be a permanent symbol of leadership, loyalty, and the bearded brilliance that brought glory back to the red and blue.
And as the sun sets over the MCG each evening, one thing will be certain — the shadow of Max Gawn will forever stand tall over the game he helped redefine.
