Indiana Left With 2027 Schedule Hole After UMass Matchup Is Canceled

Indiana will have a vacancy to fill on its 2027 football schedule after the Hoosiers and UMass mutually agreed to cancel their previously scheduled matchup, according to FBSchedules.

The change leaves Indiana with an open date on its non-conference slate and gives the Hoosiers another scheduling decision to make as they continue shaping their 2027 season.

UMass will no longer make the trip to Bloomington. Instead, the Minutemen are set to travel to Madison to face Wisconsin, with UMass receiving a $1.325 million guarantee for the matchup.

For Indiana, the cancellation means the Hoosiers currently have two non-conference opponents remaining on their 2027 schedule: Kennesaw State and FCS opponent Indiana State.

The departure of UMass creates an opportunity for Indiana to add another opponent to its schedule, potentially giving the program flexibility to pursue a different matchup that fits its competitive and scheduling priorities.

Indiana and UMass had been expected to meet as part of their respective non-conference schedules, but the two programs ultimately agreed to move in different directions. With UMass now headed to Wisconsin, Indiana will need to determine how it wants to replace the matchup.

The Hoosiers already have Kennesaw State and Indiana State on the schedule, giving them two games outside of conference play. The remaining opening could eventually be filled by another Group of Five opponent, an FCS program or a different scheduling arrangement depending on Indiana’s plans.

From a scheduling standpoint, the change gives Indiana additional flexibility. Programs often build non-conference schedules years in advance, balancing competition, travel, home dates and financial considerations. With the UMass game no longer part of the equation, Indiana has an opportunity to reshape that portion of its 2027 slate.

The move also highlights the financial side of college football scheduling. UMass’ trip to Wisconsin comes with a reported $1.325 million guarantee, providing the Minutemen with a significant payout for the road matchup.

For Indiana, the priority now shifts toward identifying the best possible replacement for UMass.

The Hoosiers’ non-conference schedule already includes Kennesaw State and Indiana State, meaning the final addition could play an important role in determining the overall difficulty and structure of the schedule.

Indiana has continued to build its football program into a more competitive force, making future scheduling decisions increasingly important. Non-conference games can provide opportunities to strengthen a résumé, prepare for conference play and give teams meaningful tests before the heart of the season begins.

Replacing UMass will therefore be more than simply filling an empty date. Indiana will have to consider what type of opponent best complements the rest of its 2027 schedule.

For now, Kennesaw State and Indiana State remain the only confirmed non-conference opponents on Indiana’s 2027 slate following the cancellation of the UMass matchup.

The Hoosiers now have an opening to address, while UMass has found another path forward with a trip to Wisconsin and a reported $1.325 million guarantee.

Indiana’s next move will determine how the rest of its non-conference schedule comes together.

The 2027 season is still ahead, but the latest scheduling change gives the Hoosiers another piece of the puzzle to solve.
