Cap headache: Brisbane Broncos veteran Adam Reynolds opens up on future following Hull KR links, as he faces sad family development….

BRISBANE BRONCOS veteran Adam Reynolds admits he could leave the NRL club amidst salary cap pressures – though he has no plans to retire.

The Daily Telegraph revealed over the weekend that the 34-year-old was attracting “significant interest” from Super League side Hull KR, with Reynolds and Rovers head coach Willie Peters knowing each other from their time at South Sydney Rabbitohs.

With the Broncos set for a salary cap squeeze with the likes of Kotoni Staggs, Payne Haas, Selwyn Cobbo, Kobe Hetherington and Cory Paix all coming off contract.

But, despite Reynolds’ issues with injuries, he has no desire to retire.

“The plan is to play on,” Reynolds told Triple M.

“I will keep all options open at the moment. You never know what is around the corner.

“Ideally, I would love to stay at the Broncos but it is pretty tight there at the moment.

“If things work out, great. If not you would have to look and explore and see what else was out there.”

Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy previously told News Corp that they would not rush Reynolds into a decision, with the 34-year-old set for a job at the Queensland club once he hangs his boots up.

“It’s only early in the season. We want to give Reyno the space and time for him to get through some games of footy and see where his mind and body is at. He’s earned that right,” Donaghy said.

“None of us want to rush a decision, from our end that’s out of respect for Reyno more than anything else.”

Things have taken a dramatic turn at the Brisbane Broncos.

Michael Maguire’s side is facing a salary cap squeeze and need to find the funds to keep Kotoni Staggs, Selwyn Cobbo and a number of others. The Broncos had planned for Reynolds’ $550,000 contract to come off the books in 2026 and free up some space to re-sign others.

But the 34-year-old’s stellar start to the season has made him reconsider his retirement plans, and the veteran halfback is said to be leaning towards playing on next year. But with the Broncos short on cash due to big contracts handed to Reece Walsh, Payne Haas, Patrick Carrigan and Ezra Mam, it could mean Reynolds has to find a new team.

News Corp reported over the weekend that Hull Kingston Rovers are interested in bringing Reynolds to England, and he doesn’t have much desire to return to Sydney after previously playing for the Rabbitohs. It would mean relocating his young family and leaving Brisbane after they’d fallen in love with their new home since their switch from Sydney in 2022.

“We wanted a lifestyle change,” Reynolds told the Courier Mail in February about moving wife Tallara and their four kids – aged 15, 14, 10 and 7 – to Brisbane. “We wanted a big house with a big yard for the kids and the dogs, somewhere they could run around.

“To be honest, it was tough at first to leave all we had known, all our Sydney friends and family, and the kids were a bit nervous about leaving old friends at school, not knowing anyone. But from the moment we announced we were coming up, everyone just took us in.

“It’s been a great move, we have felt very welcomed here, the people we’ve met and the relationships we’ve made, and the kids absolutely love it here. They don’t want to go back to Sydney. They call Brisbane home now and so do we. We feel very happy with the call we made.”

Speaking on Triple M radio on Sunday, Reynolds flagged that he’s keen to continue his career. “The plan is to play on,’’ he said. “I will keep all options open at the moment. You never know what is around the corner. Ideally I would love to stay at the Broncos but it is pretty tight there at the moment. If things work out, great. If not you would have to look and explore and see what else was out there.”

The Broncos had planned for life without Reynolds by signing Ben Hunt to a two-year deal. If Reynolds was to leave, they would have Hunt and Mam in the halves for 2026.

Tellingly, Hunt has severed his final ties to Sydney by listing his home in Caringbah South with wife Bridget. The Hunt family lived in the Sutherland region while he played for the Dragons, but they’ve since relocated to Brisbane and are seeking $2.2 million for their house in Sydney. It shows Hunt doesn’t have any plans to return to Sydney in the near future, which may indicate he’s keen to play on with the Broncos past 2026 as well.
