During the offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies will have to make significant decisions. Perhaps none will be more important than what they do with Aaron Nola.

According to early reports, Nola might command a six-year contract worth at least $150 million. It’s difficult to argue that Philadelphia should pay this price after producing an ERA of 4.46 and a WHIP of 1.15. However, Nola was outstanding in the postseason, having a 2.35 ERA and striking out 23 batters while walking only four.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, this does not mean that another team will not pay that amount. According to Morosi, the Phillies and Nola are not close to reuniting, but other teams are interested in him.

“I don’t get the sense that the Phillies and Aaron Nola are at all close on a reunion.”

The Boston Red Sox, among other teams, could be interested in the 30-year-old righty, according to Morosi.

“Whether it’s Boston, the Cubs, the Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants, that group, and the Padres you can put in that conversation, too. I think Aaron Nola’s going to do his due diligence.”

Boston finished the season ranked 22nd in starter ERA (4.68). With Nola being arguably the top starter on the market, it makes sense from the Red Sox perspective to be aggressive.

While Boston might have to overpay, there are plenty of positives with Nola. In the 2021-22 season, Nola had a 3.25 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. Even in a down 2023 season, Nola finished with a 3.77 ERA and ranked in the 96th percentile of Chase%, according to Baseball Savant.

Outside of Shohei Ohtani, who will not be pitching in 2024, Nola may be the best pitcher available. The Red Sox might also pursue Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, and Sonny Gray.

Boston will need to improve on the mound, whether or not Aaron Nola is available.
