AC Milan aren’t pursuing the best manager on the market
Even at the beginning of the season, there were rumors surrounding the future of manager Stefano Pioli at AC Milan, and with the Rossoneri finishing the campaign so far behind rivals Inter Milan in the battle for the Scudetto, the coach’s future is all but sealed.
Pioli has done well for Milan in the last few seasons, turning things around at the club and winning the 2020/21 Serie A title for the Rossoneri.
He even helped Milan reach the Champions League semifinals in the 2022/23 campaign, showing that Milan can indeed get back to being true contenders on a European scale.
Now, Milan need to find a replacement who can take the club to new heights, but, strangely enough, they aren’t interested in the best option on the open market.
La Gazzetta dello Sport have reported that Milan are not prioritizing Roberto De Zerbi as a hire. De Zerbi just recently announced he will leave Brighton at the end of the 2023/24 season for a new challenge.
De Zerbi was a successful coach in Serie A for Sassuolo, turning the Neroverdi into one of the most exciting attacking sides in European football.
He then went on to coach Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League and made a real name for himself in England last season when he took Brighton to the Europa League as a first-year Premier League coach.
La Gazzetta dello Sport say that Milan are continuing to prioritize Lille coach Paulo Fonseca and even Royal Antwerp manager Mark van Bommel, who spent one season with Milan as a player after an illustrious tenure with Bayern Munich.
De Zerbi has more acclaim and a better track record of success than either Fonseca or van Bommel, so hiring one of those two over De Zerbi would be a surprise.
