The Atlanta Braves took a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning, but were unable to hold it in a 4-3 walk-off loss to the New York Mets.

The Braves offense threatened early in the first inning against Severino. Austin Riley singled with two outs and then moved to second when Matt Olson was hit by a pitch. Severino walked Ozuna on four pitches to load the bases, but Michael Harris went down swinging to leave the runners stranded. Atlanta did come up with a big hit in the second though as Jarred Kelenic turned on a fastball from Severino and drove it out to right for his second home run of the season.

Bryce Elder entered the game looking to bounce back from a rough start last time out against the Dodgers. He allowed a leadoff single to DJ Stewart, but then retired the next three hitters in the first. Elder allowed another leadoff single to J.D. Martinez in the second, but again retired the next hitters in order.

The Mets broke through in the third against Elder. Stewart singled with one out to get things started. Elder struck out Starling Marte, but then allowed a single to Francisco Lindor to put runners at the corners. He jumped ahead of Pete Alonso 0-2, but then left a sinker up that Alonso yanked inside the bag at third and past Austin Riley. Stewart scored to tie the game. Elder then fell behind J.D. Martinez 2-0 but came back and struck him with a beautifully placed sinker to end the inning.

Severino struck out Riley swinging in the third and Riley appeared to clutch at his rib cage area on his way back to the dugout. Riley stayed in for the third, but was replaced in the fourth by Zack Short. The Braves announced that he left the game due to tightness in his left side.

Elder and Severino continued to put up zeroes. Elder struck out two in a 1-2-3 fourth. Severino allowed a one-out single to Ronald Acuña Jr. in the fifth but then picked him off first base. Ozzie Albies grounded out to end the inning.

Elder retired seven straight hitters after Alonso’s third inning single and Atlanta’s offense got back to work in the sixth. Short worked a walk to start the inning and then moved to second on a single by Olson. That would be it for Severino as the Mets would go to their bullpen for righty Reed Garrett. He was greeted with a single by Marcell Ozuna that scored Short to put the Braves back in front 2-1.

Garrett recovered and struck out Michael Harris, Orlando Arcia and Kelenic swinging to strand the runners.

The Mets answered right back against Elder in the sixth. Lindor led off the inning with a double and then Alonso barely missed a homer in right center. Lindor scored on the double to tie the game up at 2-2. Elder got Martinez to pop out in foul territory for the first out and was then replaced by Aaron Bummer. The Mets countered by sending Tyrone Taylor to pinch-hit for Brett Baty, but Bummer struck him out looking for the second out. Bummer then walked Harrison Bader but got Jeff McNeil to ground out to end the inning.

Acuña walked again with one out in the seventh and was then immediately picked off for the second time. He was originally ruled safe but the Mets challenged and the call was overturned.

Bummer stayed in to start the seventh and struck out pinch-hitter Tomas Nido. He followed that by walking Stewart and was then replaced by Jesse Chavez. Chavez allowed a single to Marte, but then got Lindor to tap back to the mound. Chavez threw to second for the second out, but Arcia’s replay throw to first was late. With runners at the corners, Chavez got Alonso to fly out to Harris for the third out.

The Braves retook the lead in the eighth against Adam Ottavino. Short walked again and then stole second. He would come around to score on another single by Ozuna to put Atlanta in front 3-2.

Chavez stayed in to start the eighth and got Martinez to fly out. Brian Snitker then went back to his bullpen for Dylan Lee who retired Joey Wendle on a ground out and then struck out Bader.

Things went south quickly in the ninth. With Raisel Iglesias having pitched the last two days, Atlanta turned to A.J. Minter to try and close it out. McNeil reached to start the inning on a bunt and then moved to second on a sacrifice by Nido. Brandon Nimmo then sent a 3-2 pitch from Minter over the wall in right center for a walk-off two-run homer to give the Mets a 4-3 win.

The loss drops the Braves to 24-13 on the season. They still win the series, but fail to pick up a game in the standings on the Phillies who lost to the Marlins Sunday afternoon. Atlanta will return home Monday where they will begin a long homestand with a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs.
