Impressive News: The Phillies Family Celebrate, as one of Her All-Stars get an unusual Accolade
Chase Utley, a former Philadelphia Phillies player, has cast his first ballot for the Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
Adam Rubin, an ESPN Mets reporter and member of the Baseball Writers Association of America, cast his ballot, according to the BBWAA’s Hall of Fame ballot tracker.
Voters are not compelled to reveal their ballot, but many do in order to be open about who they are voting for.
Rubin returned a ballot with votes for 10 players, which is the maximum.
Utley was one of them. The rest of the votes went to Carlos Beltrán, Adrian Beltré, Todd Helton, Andruw Jones, Álex Rodríguez, Manny Ramírez, Gary Sheffield, Billy Wagner and David Wright.
Utley, a second baseman, is on the ballot for the first time. He spent 2003-15 with Philadelphia before spending the final three seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
At the plate he slashed .275/.358/.465 with 1,885 hits, 411 doubles, 259 home runs, 1,025 RBI, 1,103 runs and 154 stolen bases. He helped the Phillies win the 2008 World Series.
He was a six-time All-Star, a four-time Silver Slugger, and placed three times in the Top 10 in MVP voting.
Holdovers Omar Vizquel, Andy Pettitte, Bobby Abreu, Jimmy Rollins, Mark Buehrle, Francisco Rodrguez, and Torii Hunter join first-year candidates Joe Mauer, José Bautista, Bartolo Colon, Adrián González, Matt Holliday, Brandon Phillips, José Reyes, and James Shields on the ballot.
The whole class will be released on January 24, with voting by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America to be completed by December 31. A select panel will decide in December if any of the candidates on the Contemporary Baseball Era Managers/Executives/Umpires vote will advance to next year’s ceremony, which is scheduled for July 21 in Cooperstown, N.Y.
In order to be inducted, a player must receive 75 percent of the BBWAA’s votes.
