Dreadful: The Pirates have received negative news regarding a Terrific young Starter.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery, Pirates pitcher Johan Oviedo appears to be out for the rest of 2024.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have taken a significant injury hit. Johan Oveido, the Pirates’ No. 2 starter this season, will have Tommy John surgery after suffering an elbow injury. MLB.com Pirates journalist Francys Romero broke the story on Saturday, and The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Jason Mackey confirmed it:

Oviedo made his Major League Baseball debut in 2020 with the St. Louis Cardinals. During the 2022 season, he was dealt to the Pirates in exchange for José Quintana. Last year, he tossed 30.2 innings in seven starts for Pittsburgh, posting a 3.23 ERA and a 2-2 record.

This year, however, was a little more difficult for Oviedo. In 2023, he made 32 starts with the Pirates, pitching 177.2 innings and finishing 9-14 with a 4.32 ERA. And, earlier this month, Mackey claimed that Oviedo was suffering from elbow pain and that Tommy John surgery was being considered. That option has now been chosen, and he will most likely miss the entire 2024 season.

Oviedo has participated in 72 games in his MLB career, starting 58 of them. He has a 4.32 ERA and 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. However, he made a significant improvement in 2022, posting a 3.21 ERA in 21 games with the Cardinals and Pirates. And, while he took a step back this year, he was still a very competent starter for Pittsburgh with a lot of upside. We’ll see what happens following this procedure.
