Yankees Rivalry Roundup: Orioles gain ground, Red Sox somehow lose to White Sox

As the Yankees lost on Friday night, they also lost a bit of ground to the O’s.

The Yankees’ marquee series against the Dodgers didn’t start out in ideal fashion as the Bombers fell in extra innings 2-1. Despite that, they had been on a good eight-game winning streak prior to the loss, giving them a bit of cushion on their various races in the standings.

Speaking of those races, let’s check in on what was happening around baseball on Friday night in today’s Rivalry Roundup.

Baltimore Orioles (40-22) 6, Tampa Bay Rays (31-32) 3

Home runs by Anthony Santander, Ryan Mountcastle, and Jordan Westburg helped the O’s down the Rays to get to the 40-win mark on the season and gain a game on the Yankees.

Santander’s solo shot was part of a two-run second inning that gave Baltimore an early lead, but the Rays clawed right back with a run each in the second and third to tie things up. However after that, the Orioles eventually took control. Mountcastle hit a two-run shot off Aaron Civale, giving Baltimore a lead they ended up holding for good,

Cole Irvin ended up giving the O’s 5.2 solid innings, allowing two earned run and striking out six. After that, his bullpen took control, combining to allow just two baserunners over the final 4.1 innings, sealing a win.

San Francisco Giants (31-33) 5, Texas Rangers (30-33) 2

Seven strong innings from Logan Webb helped the Giants send the reigning World Series champions another game under .500.

After two Wilmer Flores solo homers off Michael Lorenzen got the Giants off to a good start, the Rangers answered back with two runs in the fifth. However after that, it was pretty much all Giants. Michael Conforto broke the tie with a go-ahead homer in the seventh.

Meanwhile after that fifth inning, the Rangers didn’t put another runner on base all game. Webb ended up allowing just two runs on five hits, fanning six batters, and his bullpen finished things off in fairly easy fashion.

Houston Astros (29-35) 7, Los Angeles Angels (24-39) 1

After a close game through the first six innings, the Astros broke things open with a five-run seventh innings and cruised from there, downing the Angels.

While Yainer Diaz gave Houston a quick lead in the top of the first, a Kevin Pillar homer evened things up in the second. After that, pitchers Framber Valdez and Griffin Canning dueled for a while, both working around what little trouble they ran inot.

In the seventh, the Astros put a couple guys and the Angels went to their bullpen to replace Canning. That didn’t work as Yordan Alvarez came to the plate and delivered a bases-clearing, three-run double. Diaz followed with a homer a couple batters later, and that gave the Astros control which they never gave up.

Valdez ended up going all nine innings, allowing just four hits and one walk, as he struck out eight in his complete game.

Other Games

  • Miami Marlins (22-41) 3, Cleveland Guardians (40-22) 2: Jazz Chisolm Jr.’s go-ahead single in the eighth inning proved the difference for Miami. Marlins’ starter Ryan Weathers had to exit in the third due to injury, but in his place, the bullpen kept the Guardians off the board for 6.2 innings, allowing Chisolm to make the difference in the eighth.
  • Kansas City Royals (38-26) 10, Seattle Mariners (36-29) 9: After trailing 8-0 at one point, the Royals staged a stunning comeback to walk-off against the Mariners. While Kansas City had started to chip away at their deficit back in the fourth inning, they still trailed by two runs going into the ninth. There, they put a couple runners on, allowing a Bobby Witt Jr. triple to tie the game, and an error on an uncompleted double play on a Nelson Velázquez grounder (after two intentional walks) to win it.
  • Chicago White Sox (16-48) 7, Boston Red Sox (32-32) 2: Despite allowing one run in particularly odd fashion, the White Sox finally snapped their 14-game losing streak and won their first game since May 21st. They mostly have Garrett Crochet to thank for that, as he struck out 10 in six innings, having allowed just three hits.
  • Oakland Athletics (26-39) 2, Toronto Blue Jays (30-33) 1: A JJ Bleday walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the A’s a win over Toronto in a low-scoring game. Chris Bassitt and Hogan Harris each put in good outings to start, as the game went into the bottom of the sixth without any score. There, Oakland took the lead on a run-scoring wild pitch. Toronto answered back in the seventh, and you’d think they would be able to assert control from there, but they could never take the lead, and it eventually came back to haunt them.
