Shocking News: Baltimore Orioles Outfielder Signs Minor League Deal With White Sox
The Baltimore Orioles are one of the teams across the league who has to make savvy additions via low-level trades or through waiver claims to improve their roster with veteran players.
There are plenty of success stories that the front office has pulled off in the past, but like with anything, there are some failures as well.
One of those was outfielder Brett Phillips who the Orioles acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in 2022 for cash considerations.
The 28-year-old was coming off a solid year with the Rays in 2021 where he recorded an OPS+ of 103 and had his career high in home runs (13) and RBI (44).
Looking back on things, that was the exception and not the rule.
Throughout his seven-year career he’s posted a slash line of .187/.272/.347 with an OPS+ of 71.
Still, Baltimore made a trade for the outfielder in 2022, despite poor hitting statistics with Tampa Bay to begin the season.
Unfortunately for both sides, Phillips couldn’t turn things around with the Orioles either, as he went 2-17 with nine strikeouts during his eight games. This caused the organization to replace him on the 40-man roster and then designate him for assignment.
After clearing waivers, he was outrighted to Baltimore’s Triple-A affiliate and then hit free agency in early October 2022.
Phillips’s short tenure with the Orioles was just a blip in his veteran career as he signed a deal the the Los Angeles Angels before the 2023 season and appeared in 39 games for them.
He once again elected free agency after the year when being assigned to their Triple-A affiliate.
Now, Phillips will try his luck with the Chicago White Sox after it was reported by Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY that he signed a minor league contract with them and will get paid $1.2 million if he makes to the MLB.
