The Toronto Blue Jays are in the midst of a make-or-break offseason and they could be leaning toward a hard reset.
“Guerrero is projected to sign for over $400 million next offseason, per Spotrac, but his price could end up even higher than that,” per Pressnell. “With that in mind, the Blue Jays may look to trade him rather than holding onto him and risk losing him in free agency for nothing.”
Pressnell’s proposal would see the Blue Jays deal Guerrero to the Red Sox in exchange for young slugger Triston Casas as a replacement at first base, as well as top prospects Yoeilin Cespedes, David Sandlin and Richard Fitts for good measure.
“For the Red Sox, they can afford to lose all these players,” Pressnell added. “Guerrero replaces Casas and the prospects can be replaced because of the sheer depth of Boston’s system.”
Despite playing in the same division, the Blue Jays might be well served in sending Guerrero to the Red Sox. Boston has one of the deepest farm systems in all of baseball and has the collateral to offer the kind of package that instantly sets a new and compelling direction for Toronto.
Of course, in this scenario, the Red Sox are giving up a hefty package for what might turn out to be a one-year rental with Guerrero. But if Boston feels they can extend or re-sign the young superstar, the chance to pair him alongside Rafael Devers in the infield for years to come could be too good to pass up.
