Emerging Trade: The Green Bay Packers are to Sign two (2) released All-Pro free agents in a blockbuster move
The Green Bay Packers are known to be in the market for new talent on the defensive side of the ball. With off-season action in full swing, the Packers are likely keeping an eye on any name that teams have released (turning them into free agents). Luckily for them, some of these names include former All-Pro talent. Including the Buffalo Bills releasing superstars Tre’Davious White and Jordan Poyer.
Green Bay Packers Cap Space
The Green Bay Packers are currently sitting at $13 million in cap space as of 3/6/24, a functional amount but with the draft to come and depth positions needing to be addressed. To sign premier players without sacrificing other positions they will likely need to create more cap space.
They can do this through a few means, most notably the release of all-time Green Bay Packer David Bakhtiari. A release of the premier lineman would open up $21 million in usable cap space for the Packers. Given his battles with injuries over the years, it is entirely plausible that Green Bay goes this route.
Restructures are also an important tool used by many teams. If the Packers were to restructure Jaire Alexander, Elgton Jenkins, and Aaron Jones this would save them north of $30 million. If they were to pursue these options, the Green Bay Packers could comfortably make a splash signing.
Jordan Poyer/ Tre’Davious White Released By Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills have had a notably strong defense for a handful of years, but for them, it was time to take some age off the top of their team. They did so by releasing two premier players, safety Jordan Poyer and cornerback Tredavious White.
The Green Bay Packers will likely be most in the market for a premier safety like Jordan Poyer. The 32-year-old safety may not seem to fit in with the Packers’ notably young team, but when pursuing a Superbowl trophy, talent is the most important trait. Jordan Poyer certainly has a lot of talent.
In 16 games he notched over 100 tackles, through the 2021-22 season, he had the lowest allowed passer rating as the nearest defender. In 2022 he premiered at number 45 in the NFL’s top 100 players list, in ’23 he stayed in the top 60 at #57. Recognized all around the league as one of the best safeties in the world, there is not much question that the Packers may be interested in adding such talent to a weak position group.
Tre’Davious White is still only 29 years old. The Shreveport, Louisiana native and former defensive player of the year candidate has been an all-world lockdown corner since his drafting in 2017. He has battled injuries his last couple of seasons, including season-ending ACL and Achilles tears, which likely has a lot to do with his release.
Given that he can recover to even three-quarters of what he was capable of, he still has the potential to be a lockdown threat on the outside of a defensive formation. Although the Green Bay Packers are likely looking for more of a slot archetype, there’s no reason they would not entertain the idea of adding a premier talent on the other side of superstar Jaire Alexander.
