Breaking: Celtics starter to have MRI; to Determine the Gravity of the Injury

Exclusive Update: Celtics starter will have MRI to check the severity of injury

Kristaps Porzingis is the most impactful addition of the 2023-2024 season - CelticsBlog

When Kristaps Porzingis was ruled out for the rest of the Celtics’ game against the Magic on Friday in Orlando, supporters held their breath. The starting big man had only played 22 minutes up to that point due to left calf soreness.

“Kristaps Porzingis tells the Globe he’ll have an MRI on his left calf tomorrow but doesn’t think the injury is too serious,” Washburn writes. He claimed to have felt a jolt while jogging across the floor. I didn’t slip.

It’s unknown whether Porzingis will miss any time due to the injury at this time. After the game, Porzingis told the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn that he plans to undergo an MRI on Saturday, but he doesn’t believe the injury is significant. Regardless, the fact that it does not look to be a long-term problem is good news for the Celtics.

The Celtics’ next game is at home against the Hawks at 6 p.m. Sunday at TD Garden. Even if Porzingis is held out for that game, the absence doesn’t appear to be anything that’ll be extended.

The Celtics struggled in their 113-96 loss to the Magic without Porzingis. They were also without Jrue Holiday, but it was no excuse given the C’s lack of juice on Friday. The Magic also dominated the offensive boards, as the Celtics underestimated Porzingis’ size inside the paint.

This season, Porzingis has appeared in 15 of the Celtics’ 16 games. He missed out the win over the 76ers on Nov. 15 due to a right knee injury, which was largely for precautionary reasons. The Celtics chose to be careful with their injury-prone big man and kept him out of that game. This is expected to be the case again, with Porzingis experiencing calf discomfort as the C’s hope he can stay healthy in the coming months.
