Former Chicago Cubs manager David Ross had one year left on his contract when he was fired earlier this month, but according to a new report, he is taking his time in deciding where to go next.

According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Brendan Kuty, Ross was offered a job as the New York Yankees’ bench coach shortly after being sacked by the Cubs, but turned it down.

“Ross would prefer to manage if he immediately jumps back into a uniformed position,” the report said.

Rosenthal expanded on that story in the most recent episode of his “Foul Territory” podcast.

“It doesn’t appear it’s going in that direction,” he added of Ross getting a managerial job this summer. “Ross will most likely sit out the season or work as an assistant somewhere.” He could do that while still collecting his salary for 2024. David Ross will be just fine. David Ross isn’t just an excellent baseball player; he’s also a good broadcaster.”

The Yankees’ bench coach post became available after Carlos Mendoza took over as manager of the New York Mets after Craig Counsell stated that he was not interested in moving to Flushing Meadows.

MLB currently has only two managerial openings. The Milwaukee Brewers are still looking for a replacement for Craig Counsell, who took up as Cubs manager this week. The San Diego Padres, who saw Bob Melvin leave for the San Francisco Giants, are also yet to find a manager.

Two other positions have already been filled: the Houston Astros moved bench coach Joe Espada to manager when Dusty Baker retired, and the Cleveland Guardians hired Stephen Vogt to replace Terry Francona after he departed at the end of the season.

MLB Insider: The New York Yankees Are Among the Most Serious Suitors for Superstar Slugger

The New York Yankees are aiming to significantly improve their lineup, and this is one option.

The Yankees are one of the most serious suitors for free agent versatile phenom Cody Bellinger, according to MLB source Jon Morosi.

“I believe the Yankees will be in there on Bellinger until the very end this offseason,” he added.

This offseason, the Yankees are looking for at least two left-handed hitting outfielders, and Bellinger fits the description. The former NL MVP can play center field, left field, and first base, providing alternatives for the Yankees and manager Aaron Boone.

If the Yankees decide not to pursue two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani, who is likely to command a record-breaking contract in the $500 million level, Bellinger would be the next best choice, according to Morosi.

“Besides Ohtani, Bellinger is the best position player out there right now,” he said.

The Yankees have also inquired about San Diego Padres superstar Juan Soto this offseason, but Morosi claims Bellinger is their top goal right now.

In 2023, Bellinger had a breakout season with the Chicago Cubs, hitting.307 with a.881 OPS and 26 home runs.

The Yankees’ lineup lacks depth beyond Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres. By bringing in Bellinger, the team would fix a slew of concerns, both offensively and defensively.
