Isaiah Rodgers shared his perspective on the suspension he received from the NFL for breaking the league’s anti-betting policy while he was still a member of the Indianapolis Colts.

In a recent interview with ESPN, the Philadelphia Eagles cornerback clarified that he made the bets on behalf of others, not for himself, while using his online sports betting account.

“Just trying to help friends and family out, just knowing that it wasn’t legal at the time in Florida, and it was in Indiana,” said Rodgers. “At the end of the day, I knew the rules. I wasn’t supposed to do it, and I got to take what comes with it.”

After it was announced that Isaiah Rodgers was one of the four players suspended for betting on the NFL on June 29, 2023, the Indianapolis Colts waived him on the same day.

Why was Isaiah Rodgers suspended in the first place?

At the time of his suspension, Isaiah Rodgers was said to have placed more than 100 wagers, mostly in the $25 to $50 range, that included Indianapolis Colts matches through his gambling account. However, the one bet that caught everyone off guard was when he won after placing a $1,000 prop bet on over/under on rushing yards by his then-teammate, running back Jonathan Taylor.

The NFL then launched an investigation after they confirmed his activity. Following his release from Indiana, Isaiah Rodgers said on social media that he had accepted “full responsibility” for his actions and that he had disappointed his loved ones.

“Addressing the current reports, I want to take full responsibility for my actions,” wrote Rodgers. “I know I have made mistakes, and I am willing to do whatever it takes to repair the situation. The last thing I ever wanted to do was be a distraction to the Colts organization, my coaches, and my teammates. I’ve let people down that I care about.”

Isaiah Rodgers’ road to his NFL comeback

A few weeks after he was suspended, the Philadelphia Eagles signed Isaiah Rodgers and placed him on the reserve/suspended list. The UMass product is eligible to apply for reinstatement after the conclusion of the 2023 campaign.

If the NFL ultimately decides to reinstate him, Isaiah Rodgers can play for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024. In his first three seasons, Rodgers started 10 games and tallied three interceptions, 90 tackles, 10 passes, and a 101-yard kick return touchdown during his rookie year.
