Breaking: Orioles reach agreement with World Series Champion Pitcher

Baltimore Orioles Are At A Critical Point In Their 'Tanking' Rebuild

The Baltimore Orioles are exploring starting pitching options and one expert believes this former foe is worth pursuing.

The Baltimore Orioles are seeking at least one more starting pitcher for their rotation. Recently, there have been reports of possible answers.

For instance, MLB.com linked the Orioles to San Francisco free agent Sean Manaea. The Orioles have also reportedly expressed interest in Japanese pitcher Naoyuki Uwasawa, who was posted by his team on Monday.

Another pitcher the Orioles have been linked to, at least from the standpoint of a potential fit, is Texas Rangers free agent Jordan Montgomery.

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden tried to narrow down a free-agent fit for each team entering next week’s MLB winter meetings in Nashville. To Bowden, Montgomery — who faced the Orioles in the postseason as the Rangers made their run to the World Series — believes the O’s are just one starter away from making a run of their own:

… adding Montgomery (not to mention taking him away from the Rangers) could be that difference-making move. Montgomery, who will turn 31 at the end of next month, showed in October that he’s a big-game pitcher. He’s also proven to be consistent as he’s posted an ERA under 4.00 in each of the past three seasons.

Montgomery’s postseason increased his asking price in free agency, and Bowden believes that he can land a deal worth $158 million over six years.

It’s believed Montgomery is interested in returning to his three previous teams — the Rangers, the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees. The New York Mets are reportedly interested, too.

He’s coming off a 2023 in which he had his best overall season, as he went 10-11 with a 3.20 ERA with a 166 strikeouts and 48 walks. With the Rangers he went 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA.

He shined in the postseason, as he went 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA. He won two of his five starts in the postseason and claimed the win in relief in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series. In his start against Houston in Game 1 of the ALCS he struck out Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez three straight times.
