A Primary Target for the top of the Braves Pitching Staff could emerge
The first truly significant trade of the MLB offseason came on Sunday, though it did not result in a huge name changing teams. Starting pitcher Aaron Nola, who was rumored as a potential starting pitching target for the Atlanta Braves, signed a seven-year, $172 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. The Braves’ interest in Nola has been confirmed by Jeff Passan:
The Atlanta Braves were a serious contender to sign Aaron Nola. However, when negotiations with Nola and his agents, Joe Longo and Garrett Parcell, progressed, the Phillies stepped up and dished out their largest contract for a pitcher, as well as the 11th largest contract ever. @BNightengale was on the ball.
Finally, Nola just wanted to stay in Philadelphia. However, this was more proof that the Braves are hoping to add a big piece to their starting rotation. With Nola off the market, Sonny Gray could be the Braves’ next target. Of course, Alex Anthopolous will be in charge. Nothing, especially the unexpected, can be predicted. The essential point is that it appears Atlanta will continue to be aggressive in bolstering its pitching as the offseason progresses.
