Syndergaard spent time with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cleveland Guardians in 2023. For the Dodgers, he had a 7.16 ERA while for the Guardians, he had a 5.40 ERA. He agreed to a one-year, $13 million contract with Los Angeles before being moved to Cleveland in exchange for Amed Rosario.

FanSided’s Robert Murray reported that teams are interested in a potential trade in the hopes of a rebound season. While 2023 didn’t assist Syndergaard, teams are hoping he can return to his 2018 and previous form.

With starting pitching often in high demand during the winter, Syndergaard might be an arm signed to devour innings. According to Baseball Savant, the metrics were significantly lower in 2023, with a below-average xERA, xBA, Chase%, Whiff%, K%, and a fastball velocity in the 22nd percentile.

At this point in his career, he must demonstrate his ability to get outs. With a one-year contract expected in the future, this could be his last chance to prove he can still pitch in the major leagues.

This offseason, there is a robust market for starting pitchers. If clubs miss out on the high-profile targets available, they may consider other possibilities. That could be the reason he gets the deal he wants heading into the 2024 season.
