Should the Browns pursue running back Alexander Mattison now that the Vikings have released him?

There are more than enough questions looming over the Browns running back room, from contract possibilities to drafting a back to signing a free agent.

If the Browns were to take on that last option, Alexander Mattison has been added to the potential list after the Vikings released him.

Coming out of Boise State in 2019, Mattison only started six games through his first four seasons in Minnesota as a backup to Dalvin Cook. But that came with a solid 1,670 yards on 404 carries (4.1 per carry) and 11 touchdowns through those seasons.

Ahead of 2023, Mattison received his chance to start for Minnesota with the departure of Cook, and he took advantage of the opportunity. Starting in 13 of his 16 games played, Mattison finished 32nd league wide in total rushing yards (700) on 180 carries for 3.9 yards per carry.

Mattison didn’t score a rushing touchdown. Instead, he recorded three receiving touchdowns.

Could Minnesota Vikings Compete for Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are close to achieving all three of their top goals this offseason after signing receiver Mike Evans and franchise-tagging safety Antoine Winfield Jr. All they need to do now is re-sign quarterback Baker Mayfield and the trifecta of moves the Buccaneers needed to make this offseason will be complete.

With the NFL’s open negotiating period starting on Monday, Mayfield could hit the open market once again, and at least one other team will likely enter into the conversation as a competitor for the quarterback’s services.

“Mayfield should have a robust market if he makes it to free agency since he’s the second-best option behind (Kirk) Cousins after a breakout year (4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, 10 interceptions),” says Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. “He may even be a target for Minnesota if Cousins leaves. Mayfield made $4 million in 2023 and his next contract will likely exceed $30 million per year. Wide receiver Mike Evans just re-signed for significant money, so clearly the Buccaneers have no plans to rebuild. I think they pay up before Mayfield can hit free agency.”
