Brutal Reality: Kirk Hammett Opens Up on ‘Butting Heads With James and Lars,’ Names ‘Most Well-adjusted’ Ex-Metallica Member speaks on Metallica’s creative….

“I have to say, I do have a temper.”
Metal guitar legend Kirk Hammett revealed that he too can sometimes “butt heads” with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich when it comes to Metallica’s creative process.Apart from being the founders, James and Lars have become kind of famous for their quarrels. That, of course, isn’t necessarily a bad thing since Metallica became one of the biggest bands in the world. Their attitudes — which the general public witnessed around the time their greatest album, “St. Anger,” came out — turned out to be important for both creative and business success. On the other hand, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo are more laid back and easy-going in their attitudes.

However, according to what Kirk said in a recent interview with The Telegraph, this may not actually be the case. “I have to say, I do have a temper,” he offered. “And I can butt heads with people. I butt heads with James and Lars occasionally.”

If you’re a devoted metal fan, this may seem a bit unexpected. But when asked to elaborate on what they have to butt heads, he said that it can be about “everything,” pointing out that “it’s just part of being in a band and being with someone for 40-plus years.”

According to the guitarist, this has been the case for many years. While we see Lars and James as the much louder half of the band, Kirk claims that he never lacked in this department either. This goes back to his very beginnings in Metallica when he replaced Dave Mustaine.

“I was equally as ornery as Lars and James,” Hammett explained. “When I joined the band, I was right in there talking shit and doing crazy stuff, just as much as James and Lars and Cliff were. Sometimes, prickly people turn on other people around them.”

The reason for this kind of behavior turns out to be their background. However, there’s been one member who’s been a calmer quarter of the metal quartet. Discussing the matter, Kirk said:

“We were like a gang of youths and just looking for somewhere to belong. I came from a broken home, James came from a broken home, Lars came from a broken home. The most well-adjusted person was Cliff Burton. We were all basketcases! But we created this thing called Metallica that’s been our refuge. It’s been the one constant in our lives.”

“My dad was a full-blooded Irishman who liked to drink and liked to scrap. He was always fighting people, even fighting his friends. He would get together with my uncles, and it was just one big fucking toxic soup of masculinity, and that’s what I came out of.”
