After a historic season averaging 33.9 PPG, 9.8 APG, and 9.2 RPG, a few were surprised to see Luka Doncic not win the 2023-24 Most Valuable Player award. His statistics haven’t been seen since the likes of Wilt Chamberlain and the Mavericks finished with 50 wins in a stacked Western Conference.
The people who thought he should’ve won MVP had their claims supported when he led the Mavs to the NBA Finals and won Western Conference Finals MVP after dominating the Minnesota Timberwolves. Now, he he a little extra proof that he should’ve been the MVP.
Luka Doncic has won the ESPY Award for the 2024 Best NBA Player over Denver’s Nikola Jokic (who took home the MVP), Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Boston’s Jayson Tatum. ESPN announced the award with the help of the Make-A-Wish Foundation before the ESPYs started.
ESPN likely went ahead and announced this as Doncic won’t be in attendance for the ESPYs tonight as he is on vacation, taking a rest after a year-long stretch of basketball with very few breaks between playing for Slovenia and the Mavericks. The ESPYs are fan-voted.
Doncic has continued to garner recognition as one of the best players in the world, having already made five First-Team All-NBAs and multiple top-ten MVP finishes. The discourse surrounding his MVP campaign this season was odd despite his otherworldly stats, as he finished in third behind Jokic and Gilgeous-Alexander. If he can lead the Mavs to one of the top seeds in the West next season, he should be able to take home his first MVP trophy.
Stats Show How Impressive Luka Doncic Was This Past Season
Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks didn’t win MVP last season but everyone still agrees that he had an amazing year and cemented his place as one of the greatest players in the league.
On Thursday night, Doncic was given the ESPY for NBA Player of the Year, and the stats back up that choice.
StatMuse pointed out Doncic’s amazing season on Twitter, reminding readers that he averaged 32.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 9.4 assists while also claiming an All-Star spot and a place on the First Team All-NBA.
He also led the league in points and won Western Conference Finals MVP.
Doncic had a jaw-dropping season from beginning to end.
After years of certain fans complaining about Doncic’s physical state and conditioning, he entered the season looking ready to go and was consistent the entire time.
And the rest of his team was looking great too.
They made some mid-season adjustments, got even better, and were able to power themselves all the way to the NBA Finals.
They ultimately lost the championship to the Boston Celtics but Doncic and his Mavericks had a season to be very proud of.
So, what’s ahead for Doncic?
Next season could be even more exciting in Dallas, especially now that the Mavericks have added Klay Thompson.
And Doncic will try to recreate these numbers or play even better.
If that happens, he might finally claim his first MVP trophy.
Competition for that award will be tough with Nikola Jokic attempting to win it again and others like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Joel Embiid, and others playing well too.
But Doncic’s greatness cannot be denied and he could build upon all the great things he did in 2023-24.
