The basketball world is abuzz with discussions about the MVP race and how the NBA’s voting system ranks players. Many debates focus on whether current leader Nikola Jokic should win the MVP award again. Even the Denver Nuggets superstar agrees, acknowledging that other players deserve consideration for the award.

Speaking at the press conference after yesterday’s game, the two-time MVP was asked about the MVP conversation.

I think the whole MVP conversation is kinda getting out of control. I think I’m playing good basketball, the team is playing good basketball. If I win it great, if I don’t win it, congrats to the other guy. I think there is a lot of players playing really good basketball in the league. I think a couple guys deserve to have that award. Nikola Jokic said

By his own admission, Nikola Jokic is more concerned about how his team is performing at the moment. It’s not that he will not appreciate winning the MVP trophy for the third time. Moreso, it will not make or break his season as his goal is to win another championship. However, his comments suggest that the league should look at the other players.

Many claim that the defending Finals MVP should not be given the award as it will deny other players whose contributions are evident for their teams. However, the calculations in the MVP race have positioned Jokic to win it again.

Nikola Jokic’s target is another championship, with or without MVP award in hand

Most title winning teams have one problem, that is to repeat as champions or at least get them into a position to do so. All the champions in the NBA for the past five seasons have been unable to return to the NBA Finals so far. Jokic wants to break that trend, as he knows the core of the Denver Nuggets is still intact.

Right after the All-Star weekend, Jokic apparently sent his teammates a text message. It was to bring the focus back to the task at hand, that is to contend for the championship again. The 6′ 11″ center’s motivation is apparent as the Nuggets lost three games in row just before the All-Star Weekend dropping them down to 4th in the standings.

Jokic knew that they have to get back on top if they have to contend for another title. He wants to continue fighting for more rings. And he prefers it, whether he has another MVP award on his shelf or not.
