The San Francisco 49ers aren’t at full strength and won’t be for the rest of the season.

San Francisco lost star receiver Brandon Aiyuk for the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL. The 49ers still have high hopes for the season and certainly could make a deep playoff run with the way the roster currently is constructed.

Landing another wide receiver ahead of the trade deadline only could help with that fact. USA Today’s Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz suggested New York Giants receiver Darius Slayton.

“Darius Slayton, WR, New York Giants: Dwindling options here for San Francisco after several other teams staked their claim at receiver,” Middlehurst-Schwartz said. “Slayton would fit the bill of a possible short-term replacement for Aiyuk as a field stretcher and run-after-catch threat. But San Francisco might not have the same motivation to try to pry him away from New York as some other teams.”

Slayton is in the final year of a two-year, $12 million deal which could be very affordable for San Francisco. The 49ers have plenty of talent and plenty of cap space. Landing Slayton could help fill in for the loss of Aiyuk well and help put the 49ers back on track.

This is a great idea and should be considered by San Francisco. The trade deadline will come and pass on Nov. 5 so the 49ers don’t have much time left to make a move. If the 49ers want to make a move, they should give the Giants a call as fast as possible.

The NFL trade deadline is growing closer by the minute, and the San Francisco 49ers have held their cards close to their vests.

At 4-4, the 49ers aren’t where they would have hoped to be at the midseason mark in 2024. As defending conference champions, San Francisco is counting on making a deep playoff run once again, and doing so could require additional firepower, especially on defense.

Though they have stars at every level, the San Francisco defense has been fairly pedestrian in 2024, especially in the second half of games. The pass rush, in particular, wears down as the minutes tick by, and to fix that, the 49ers could look to reunite with an ex-player on the trade market.

Insider Matt Barrows of The Athletic discussed possible trade scenarios for the 49ers on Friday, and named Tennessee Titans star and ex-49er Arden Key as a player that could make sense for San Francisco in a hypothetical trade.

“There could be all sorts of possibilities on the trade market,” Barrows said. The 49ers could even pick up a former player. Arden Key (Titans) could be available.”

Key, 28, has had a very solid career, especially since first signing with the 49ers in 2021. He set a career-high with 6.5 sacks that season, and has 23 for his career, to go with an impressive 76 quarterback hits.

Key’s contract carries a $9.3 million cap hit in 2025, which isn’t the end of the world, but could be tough for the 49ers to fit into the payroll if quarterback Brock Purdy gets a lucrative extension. But that’s a future problem. This is now, and the 49ers are under immense pressure to win now.
