The Toronto Blue Jays have announced their first signing of the off-season as they have signed for Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Wilfredo Cordero to a minor league deal.

The Blue Jays have been talking about bringing in pitchers this season and while the fans are expecting bigger signings the Blue Jays decided to start things off with a minor league deal to get their feet wet.

The Blue Jays have agreed to terms on a minor league deal with 22 year old pitcher Wilfredo Cordero and have already assigned him to the Dominican Summer League Blue Jays.
Per the transactions page, the #BlueJays have made their first signing: RHP Wilfredo Cordero

Cordero is currently in Dominican Summer League

It may have slipped under the radar but the Blue Jays made their first off-season signing yesterday. They picked up Wilfredo Cordero, a 22 year old pitcher who has yet to make it above rookie league. In 41.2 career IP he has an ERA of 12.96. He did not play professionally in 2024
This is an interesting choice by the Blue Jays who definitely need pitchers in their organization but Cordero did not play in 2024 as he was released by the Brewers before the season started.

Prior to that, Cordero played in the Brewers minor league system in 2023 and the Rangers minor league system in 2022 where he pitched 41.2 innings and putting up a 12.96 ERA across that time.

While this is only a minor league signing, it is nice to see the Blue Jays get the ball rolling this off-season and hopefully there is more signings to come.

Blue Jays named potential landing spot for $119 million superstar

The Toronto Blue Jays missed the postseason in 2024. With Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. set to be free agents soon, the team could look to capitalize on its window to win with them.

While listing potential suitors for Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand named the Blue Jays as a landing spot.

“If it feels as though the Blue Jays are a potential suitor for every significant free agent, it’s because they are. Toronto showed a willingness to spend big during its pursuit of Shohei Ohtani last offseason, and the Jays have thrust themselves into the Soto sweepstakes,” wrote Feinsand. “The Blue Jays had marginal production from third base last season after letting Matt Chapman walk as a free agent, so Bregman would be a solid upgrade. Signing him would also protect Toronto from the potential loss of Bo Bichette and/or Vladimir Guerrero Jr. a year from now.”

The Blue Jays adding Bregman serves two purposes for the team. They will be able to compete next season with Guerrero and BIchette and have a superstar on their roster if one of them leaves next winter.

Bregman has been one of the best third basemen in baseball for most of the last decade. He is a two-time All-Star, Gold Glover and Silver Slugger. He is the clear-cut best third baseman on the market. Spotrac projects Bregman to sign a four-year, $119 million deal in free agency. He hit 26 home runs in 2024 and won his first career Gold Glove.

Adding Bregman could be a great addition for the Blue Jays regardless of if they can land Juan Sotoi or not. He has shown he can produce on the biggest stage if the Blue Jays can get into the postseason.
