Erik Spoelstra’s Ex-Wife Says LeBron James Leaving The Heat Forced Her To Cut Vacation Short In 2014
In a new Instagram post, Erik Spoelstra’s ex-wife Nikki Sapp revealed that LeBron James’ decision to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers and leave the Miami Heat forced the couple to cut their vacation to Chicago short in 2014.
Sapp: “Chicago recap incoming… First proper time in Chicago to celebrate my cousin’s college graduation with my family. The actual first time in Chi… I landed… went to Millenium Park… Got the news LBJ was leaving Miami and had to scoot right back home. So I was in Chi for less than 24 hrs. Doesn’t count. This totally counts! Love getting to be here with my family. Send recs…”
One can understand why such a major free-agency move would force Coach Spo to return to Miami. LeBron James was the central figure of the Miami Heat, and his leaving would have thrown Spoelstra and Pat Riley’s plans for the next season into disarray.
LeBron James had arguably his best years in Miami. During his four-year stint in South Beach, James led the Heat to 4 consecutive NBA Finals. He also won the NBA championship twice, along with 2 Finals MVPs, and 2 regular-season MVPs in 2012 and 2013. James was the best player in the world during his time in Miami.
In Miami, LeBron averaged 26.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 6.7 assists over 4 seasons. James, along with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, dominated the NBA, and the Heat became one of, if not the best teams in the NBA during those years.
James controversially decided to move to Miami in 2010 with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The move made James the biggest villain in the NBA, as fans turned on him for teaming up with two other superstars after a disappointing stint in Cleveland.
Could LeBron James Make Yet Another Return To Cleveland?
Over the past few months, there has been speculation that LeBron could pull the same trick and return to Cleveland for a third stint with the Cavaliers this offseason. LeBron James is a free agent this year and might want to prioritize playing with his son Bronny, who might get drafted into the league.
James was seen sitting courtside at a Cavs game recently, where he received a standing ovation from the fans who saw him bring a championship to the city in 2016. His visit came during the Cavs playoff game against the Celtics.
Many NBA executives were left curious by James’ visit to Cleveland, with some speculating that he may have been sending a message to the league with this visit amidst rumors of Bronny getting drafted into the league. While others have speculated he was in Cleveland to scout Darius Garland as a potential target for the Lakers in the offseason.
Regardless of where he ends up in the offseason, there is no denying that LeBron James is still one of the best players in the league. James turns 40 next season, and he will want to aim for another NBA championship before he calls time on his incredible career.
