Jones, 26, had spent his entire career with the Giants after being drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. His tenure in New York saw flashes of potential, including a promising 2022 campaign where he led the team to the playoffs. However, inconsistencies and injuries ultimately hampered his development, culminating in the Giants’ decision to part ways with him.
For the Raiders, the pursuit of Jones is part of a broader effort to solidify their quarterback situation. The team has been in flux since the departure of former quarterback Derek Carr, and while Jimmy Garoppolo has been brought in as a veteran presence, there is still a need for a long-term solution under center. The Raiders’ front office believes Jones could provide that stability.
“Daniel is a guy we’ve been following for a while,” said Raiders General Manager Dave Ziegler. “He has all the tools we’re looking for. His ability to move in the pocket, make plays under pressure, and his leadership qualities are exactly what this team needs right now.”
The Raiders’ interest in Jones reflects their ongoing efforts to build a competitive team around star wide receiver Davante Adams and the emerging talents on their roster. Despite his struggles in New York, Jones’ mobility and arm strength are seen as qualities that could complement the Raiders’ offensive scheme.
As Jones explores his next chapter, the Raiders are reportedly offering him an opportunity to compete for a starting role, with an official decision expected in the coming days. The team’s ability to provide a stable environment could be the key to revitalizing Jones’ career.
Minshew currently owns the top spot on the depth chart for the Raiders, but he has a record of just 2-6 in eight starts. He has also completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 1,783 yards and eight touchdowns to go along with nine interceptions.
The potential acquisition of Jones likely wouldn’t turn around Las Vegas’ season, but it could allow the team to get an extended look at the 27-year-old before he enters free agency.
Given the Raiders’ overall record of 2-8, there’s a strong chance they’ll be picking higher in the 2025 draft compared to 2024. The Raiders could certainly target a rookie signal-caller, but Jones is a potential option if the team is eyeing a veteran that has some familiarity with the coaching staff.
