Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry is headed to Indiana for the All-Star game
In all nine of his previous All-Star appearances Steph Curry suited up as a starter. For his 10th, Curry will be watching from the bench at tip-off as the 35-year-old was named a reserve for the Western Conference All-Star team on Thursday.
Curry and rookie Brandin Podziemski will be the only Warriors representatives at the 2024 All-Star game in Indiana next weekend. Curry will play in Sunday’s exhibition classic and Podziemski in the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday, along with his fellow standout rookies and sophomore players.
Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander were named the two backcourt starters in the West, despite Curry finishing second behind Doncic in the fan vote. Media and players, accounting for 25% of the vote each, voted Gilgeous-Alexander over Curry. Coaches vote on the reserves.
“Two guys that are playing amazing this year with Luka and Shai,” Curry said last week after the starters were named. “So, been doing this for a very long time, (and) the fact that it’s a talking point that I’m not (a starter) after nine healthy years — those two guys are playing amazing, they deserve it. Hopefully I’m there in Indiana in whatever capacity, but to still be doing it at this stage is always a challenge. You don’t ever take for granted how hard it is to be recognized in that way every year.”
Curry was on his way to Indianapolis during the break, anyway, to compete against WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu in a head-to-head 3-point contest on Saturday.
“The coolest thing ever,” Curry said. “I know she kind of broke the airwaves when she only missed two or something like that. I was on some golf course somewhere, my phone was blowing up saying what Sabrina had done.
Notably, the Sacramento Kings were snubbed with De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis both getting bypassed when the reserves were announced.
