NBA fines the 76ers for Embiid’s injury status against the Nuggets

The NBA has fined the 76ers for their untimely reporting of Joel Embiid’s injury status against the Denver Nuggets earlier in the month.

When the Philadelphia 76ers took on the Denver Nuggets as a part of the NBA’s rivals week earlier in the month, fans were expected to receive another look at the two top candidates for the league’s MVP award, as Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic were set to square away.

Yet, there would be no follow-up to their enthralling battle from when the two sides faced off in Philadelphia, as Joel Embiid was scratched from the lineup right ahead of tip-off due to knee soreness, something that has been an issue as of late for the Cameroonian superstar.

After the Sixers’ loss in the Mile High City, Nuggets head coach Michael Malone felt that the league would investigate the untimely manner in which the Sixers reported Embiid’s injury.

“I don’t know how you go from active, available, to out, I’m sure the league will do their due diligence because that’s frowned upon,” stated Malone, “we’ve had situations this year where we have talked to the league, and they said if a player goes from active to out, there will be an investigation.”

It would appear that the league did conduct an investigation into the matter, and has come to a conclusion as on Thursday afternoon it was announced that the Philadelphia 76ers were going to be fined $75,000 for their failure to report Embiid’s injury prior to the game.

To be more specific, the announcement cites the Sixers’ failure to “include Joel Embiid on the team’s injury report in an accurate and timely manner for the team’s game on Saturday, Jan. 27 against the Denver Nuggets.”

The league noted Philadelphia’s previous infractions of the league’s injury reporting policy when making their decision, which includes their failure to report Ben Simmons out against the Nuggets back in January 2021, and Embiid’s absence against the Miami Heat in May 2022 during the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

While the Sixers violated the league’s rules surrounding injury reports, they didn’t find any infractions regarding their player participation policy due to Embiid’s sore knee being a “confirmed injury”.
