West Ham United winger Maxwel Cornet makes a deadline-day option
West Ham winger Maxwel Cornet has reportedly just made a deadline day decision as Crystal Palace eye up a move for him.
Maxwel Cornet joined West Ham in the summer of 2022 but he’s endured a disastrous spell in East London, and he could now be set to join Crystal Palace before 11pm on deadline day tonight.
The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with an exit from the Hammers in the January transfer window, with the likes of Nottingham Forest chasing his signature.
David Moyes has barely given the Ivorian a chance this season, aside from the last two games. In total this term, Cornet has played just 294 minutes of football in all competitions (Transfermarkt).
The former Burnley man scored for us last time out in the Premier League against Sheffield United, but aside from that he looked painfully off the pace, and was hooked with 25 minutes still to play.
He’s not completely blameless. Injuries have played their part, and he can’t be expected to be up to speed having been given so few chances to impress by Moyes.
However, I do think that selling him will be the best decision from West Ham, as long as we manage to get a replacement through the door of course…
West Ham winger Maxwel Cornet makes deadline day decision
Guardian journalist Ed Aarons claims Cornet would like to join Crystal Palace from West Ham on deadline day.
If we manage to get a decent fee for Cornet – £6 million or more – I think we sure sell him, despite the huge loss that would represent.
Moyes is quite clearly not a big fan of Cornet, so if we can get a winger through the door before tonight’s deadline, we definitely should move the ex-Burnley attacker on to Palace.
He seems to have lost the pace and dynamism that made him such an explosive forward during his days with Lyon and Burnley.
I wouldn’t have a problem with him leaving at all this winter. However, if Maxwel Cornet does leave West Ham on deadline day without Moyes bringing in a replacement, it would be madness. Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals could leave the club today as well, so something surely has to give.
