Good news: Will Brandon Staley be able to flourish as the Packers’ next defensive coordinator come 2024?
The Green Bay Packers have fired their now former defensive coordinator, Joe Barry. So far, the leading candidate is former Los Angeles Chargers head coach, Brandon Staley. There are a few other candidates in the running to take over the job. However, Staley’s name is not only the biggest, but also the most interesting for this vacancy.
What Makes This A Potential Interesting Hire Is The Fact That Barry And Staley Were Both In The Sean McVay Coaching Tree.
Sean McVay may have not gotten his Rams back to the Super Bowl for awhile but his assistants certainly have made it in his absence. In his seven seasons as a head coach, McVay has had five assistant coaches become NFL head coaches elsewhere and another five have become some sort of coordinator.
If the Green Bay Packers go through with the hiring of Brandon Staley, there may be more nightmares to come for the Packer fanbase.
If The Green Bay Packers Hire Brandon Staley, It May Not Be The Last Of Joe Barry.
The worst nightmare could come true for Packers fans as the Packers might just demote Joe Barry in favor of Staley and have Barry as an defensive assistant, similar to how to the two were in 2020 with the Los Angeles Rams.
Barry was supposed to join Staley in the move to the Chargers, but Packers coach Matt LaFleur offered the Packers’ defensive coordinator position to him instead, which he took. With Staley now interviewing for Barry’s old job, it wouldn’t be shocking if the Packers keep Barry around to keep some sort of chemistry between the younger members of the team as Staley tries to fix a defense that has struggled mightily against the upper half of the league.
If The Green Bay Packers Decide To Go With Staley, What You See On The Field Might Not Be Very Different Compared To Seasons Past Due To Barry and Staley’s History.
If Barry is demoted to a defensive assistant role under Staley, it may be good for him, but the question does remain, is Brandon Staley the guy to push the Packers over the edge and get back to the Super Bowl? No, he seems like a transitional coach until who couldn’t win with the Chargers and that was with another top-10 quarterback in Justin Herbert.
As previously mentioned, there are 2-3 other candidates the Packers are looking at for the role. Alongside Staley is Cowboys defensive lineman coach Aden Durde, Buffalo Bills linebackers coach Bobby Babich, and Denver Broncos defensive backs coach Christian Parker.
The Packers should have their decision soon on who they decide to hire as their defensive coordinator and who will be able to help Jordan Love on the defensive side of the ball.
