Green Bay Packers: One Defensive Coordinator Candidate is Already Off the Board
The Green Bay Packers have been searching for a new defensive coordinator ever since Matt LaFleur made the decision to fire him last week. No stone is being left unturned as LaFleur has already reportedly interviewed (or requested to interview) six different candidates.
The first of these candidates, and the least likely to be hired by Green Bay, is former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley. A former defensive coordinator himself (Los Angeles Rams in 2020), Staley is more likely to return to his former position on Sean McVey’s staff.
The other five candidates that the Packers have been confirmed to have interviewed do not have any defensive coordinator experience:
- Bobby Babich (Buffalo Bills inside linebackers coach)
- Aden Durde (Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach)
- Christian Parker (Denver Broncos defensive backs coach)
- Dennard Wilson (Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach)
- Zach Orr (Baltimore Ravens inside linebackers coach)
Each of the five coaches listed above are considered among the youngest and brightest assistant coaches in the NFL and have been dubbed as future defensive coordinators. One of them, however, was just swooped off the Packers’ list.
The Green Bay Packers Lose Out on Buffalo Bills Coach Bobby Babich
According to NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport, the Buffalo Bills are promoting Bobby Babich to be their defensive coordinator:
As Rapoport mentions, Babich has been on the Bills’ staff since 2017 and has worked his way up through their system. This past season, the Bills did not have a defensive coordinator as Leslie Frazier decided to take a year off from coaching.
Head coach Sean McDermott called the defensive plays for Buffalo.
