Isaiah Thomas Talks About His Celtics Career
Isaiah Thomas, the former point guard, recently opened up about his journey with the team on the ‘View From the Rafters’ podcast. Acquired from the Phoenix Suns in 2015, Thomas joined a struggling Celtics team with a 20-31 record. Despite being the last pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, the 5-foot-9 dynamo quickly became one of the franchise’s most loved players, earning All-Star status in both full seasons he played for Boston.
First Impressions
Thomas’ first game as a Celtic was against the Los Angeles Lakers, where he made a strong impression by scoring 21 points. However, an ejection incident during the game became a defining moment for Thomas. It not only illustrated his fiery attitude and determination but also endeared him to the team and the city. The team’s strength coach assured Thomas that Boston would embrace his approach to the game, and that rang true.
Thomas, during his tenure with the Celtics, averaged 24.7 points per game and scored a career-high 28.9 points during the 2016-17 season. His performances were instrumental in making the Celtics team relevant once again in the NBA landscape.
In the Hearts of Boston
The warmth and continuous support from Boston fans left a lasting impression on Thomas. Even when he was no longer a Celtic, the appreciation from the city didn’t wane. Thomas also shared insights into the emotional 2017 playoffs, including the passing of his younger sister, Chyna, and his triumphant performance in Game 2 when he scored a career-high 53 points on Chyna’s 23rd birthday.
