The 2023-24 NBA regular season has been forgettable, to say the least, for the Golden State Warriors, with the once-dominant franchise struggling to even get near .500 at this point in the season.
Even though superstar guard Stephen Curry is still playing at a high level, the rest of the team’s stars haven’t really shown up this season, with Klay Thompson looking like a shell of his former self and Andrew Wiggins taking two steps back as well.
Although the 2023-24 campaign is headed in the wrong direction, there have been some positives for the Warriors, with Jonathan Kuminga starting to come into his own as the franchise hoped he would this season.
Despite not being a threat from beyond the arc, Kuminga has stepped up his game this season, and that progress is starting to get noticed, with Jason Timpf of The Volume believing he’s a star on the rise in the Bay Area.
“I’m officially at the point with Jonathan Kuminga where you just can’t trade this guy,” Timpf said. “You can’t trade him unless you’re getting back a legitimate star. I think this guy is on a bona fide star trajectory.”
Over the past few years, the Warriors have been hoping that Kuminga would start to live up to expectations and become more than a freakish athlete who leans on his athleticism while on the basketball floor.
In 43 games this season, Kuminga has averaged a career-high 14.8 points per game while also shooting a career-best 53.2% from the floor.
With the Warriors struggling the way they have been this season, Kuminga could be dangled as trade bait ahead of the NBA trade deadline next week unless the team sees a bright future for him in San Francisco.
