Former Bears Coach Says It’s Concerning About Caleb Williams’ Latest Move
Now that the 2023 NFL season is officially over, with the Kansas City Chiefs being crowned Super Bowl champions for the second straight season, all the focus and attention for teams in the league points toward the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft on April 25.
All eyes are currently on the Chicago Bears, who have a tough choice to make over the next two months, with the team owning the No. 1 overall pick in the draft for the second year in a row.
Last year, the Bears chose to trade the pick to the Carolina Panthers, with the team confident in Justin Fields’ ability and clearly not sold on one of the four quarterbacks that were in the mix for the top pick in Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson and Will Levis.
Ultimately, this may have been a mistake with Stroud turning out to be a bonafide star right out of the gate for the Houston Texans, but now Chicago has a chance to draft Caleb Williams out of the University of Southern California, who many believe could be a Week 1 starter and the next great quarterback in the NFL.
However, Williams made a concerning move recently by deciding not to go with an agent as the draft draws near, as he will represent himself, which could go terribly wrong, as Dave Wannstedt points out via NBC Sports Chicago.
“It would concern me 100 percent,” Wannstedt said. “I need to have more information on who’s going to be talking to this kid about signing the papers, and it’s going to be time to play football very, very soon.”
Although it is an obvious concern with the Bears not wanting to go through a holdout process with Williams or deal with any hiccups because he has no representation, Chicago can’t pass up on this kid who is as talented as they come.
Ultimately, this likely won’t prevent the Bears from wanting to bring in Williams, who could be the face of their franchise for many years to come.
