Just-In: Orioles Bring Back Familiar Face in Trade With Detroit Tigers

Detroit Tigers Trade Reserve Infielder to Baltimore Orioles under these Strident Conditions…..

After spending the 2023 season in the Detroit Tigers organization, infielder Tyler Nevin is headed back to the Baltimore Orioles.

After spending the 2023 season in the Detroit Tigers organization, reserve infielder Tyler Nevin is headed back to the Baltimore Orioles.

After being designated for assignment last week by Detroit, he’s been traded for cash considerations.

Per the O’s on social media:

We have acquired infielder Tyler Nevin from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash considerations.

Welcome back to Birdland, Tyler!

Nevin is a 26-year-old infielder who has spent parts of three years in the big leagues with the Orioles and Tigers. He played in 41 games for Detroit in 2023, hitting .200 with two home runs and 10 RBI.

He is a former first-round pick of the Colorado Rockies (2015).

While the reunion in Baltimore is a nice story, it will be an uphill battle for Nevin to make the roster coming out of spring training. The O’s won 101 games last season and captured the American League East crown. They did that on the heels of one of the best young rosters in the entire sport, so there are young players everywhere to contend with.

Baltimore is set to lose veteran Adam Frazier in free agency so there appears to be one opening in the infield but it very well could go to top prospect Jackson Holliday, who is angling to make the roster. Jordan Westburg also made his debut during the 2023 season and could make a strong run at a roster spot from the outset.

If Nevin is unable to make the roster, he will likely serve as organizational depth at the upper levels of the minors.

The Baltimore Orioles land a former player in a trade with the Detroit Tigers.

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired infielder Tyler Nevin from the Detroit Tigers. As part of the trade, the Orioles are sending cash considerations to the Tigers. Dan Connolly of Sportsnaut reported the trade.

Nevin returns to Baltimore after spending the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the team. In his two seasons with the Orioles, he appeared in just 64 games. In those 64 games, he hit three home runs and drove in 19 runs.

The right-handed hitter had 95 plate appearances during the 2023 season with Detroit. He slashed .200/.306/.316.

Given the trade was for cash, this doesn’t change much in the Orioles’ plans. The front office must believe that he can bring something to the team and if not, they’ll go from there. With Spring Training around the corner, Baltimore’s 40-man roster is at 39.

The former No. 38 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft signed with the Colorado Rockies for $2 million out of high school. He was traded to the Orioles in a deal for Mychal Givens in 2020. Nevin made his big league debut in May of 2021.

He’s posted impressive numbers in the Minor Leagues throughout his career. In AAA last season, he slashed .326/.400/.543 in 337 at-bats. That includes an impressive 15 home runs and 22 doubles.

If he can produce at anywhere near a similar level in the big leagues, he’d be a constant starter. However, that hasn’t been the case thus far. Perhaps it can be during his second stint with Baltimore.
