Mississippi Braves leaving Pearl at end of 2024 season
PEARL, Miss. (WLBT) – 2024 will be the last season for the Mississippi Braves in Pearl.
The team announced the news Tuesday, saying that it would be leaving for Columbus, Ga., in time for the 2025 season.
“We want to thank Pearl, the surrounding Jackson community, and the state of Mississippi for the incredible support for the franchise over the past 19 years,” the team wrote in a letter to the fans. “We have loved creating memories with you at Trustmark Park and we look forward to bringing you an amazing 2024 season.”
Pearl Mayor Jake Windham said in a statement that he’s disappointed with the Braves’ decision, saying that his city worked with lawmakers last year to craft legislation designed to help the ball club remain in the city.
He said the legislation would have provided the Braves with incentives to remain in Pearl. It was unclear if that bill passed.
“We worked diligently with Spectrum Capital, state and county leaders, as well as Diamond Baseball Holdings, to come to an agreement,” he said. “It is truly unfortunate that despite our best efforts, the Braves have chosen to take this route.”
he M-Braves, a Double-A affiliate with the Major League Baseball Atlanta Braves, began play in Pearl in 2005.
“We are hopeful that this is not the end of professional baseball in Pearl and our organization will support any efforts to bring a new team to Trustmark Park in the future,” the organization wrote in a letter to fans on social media.
