‘Did we just pull these people off the street?’ exclaims one ex-Jets coach

Rex Ryan was excited to see how the Jets would follow up their 30-6 rout over the Texans against the Dolphins on Sunday.

That didn’t last long, as the Jets trailed 24-0 by halftime with quarterback Zach Wilson, who was sacked on four of 15 dropbacks, knocked out with a concussion.

Asked why the team didn’t target wide receiver Garret Wilson like Miami targeted Jaylen Waddle, who recorded 142 yards and a touchdown receiving, Ryan put it all on the offensive line while speaking on ESPN New York’s morning show “DiPietro and Rothenberg,”

“Well, [Zach Wilson] might have targeted [Garrett Wilson], except that defense was targeting our quarterback and he had no chance to get him the football,” Ryan said, via Apple Podcasts. “I’m like, this is a joke, man. What is this a turnstile? Did we just get these guys off the street? We weren’t even competitive. It’s just brutal.”

After losing 30-0 to the Dolphins in Week 15, the Jets record dropped to 5-9 and are officially eliminated from the NFL playoff picture. They also secured their eighth straight losing season — the longest active streak in the NFL — with their biggest offseason signing, Aaron Rodgers, having lasted just four plays the entire season.

Rodgers is “likely” to be cleared to play ahead of Week 16 against the Commanders, reported ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday. But there’s no point in that now — unless the three-time MVP is only motivated to prove that he could return.

While Ryan spent most of his NFL report talking about the Jets, he spent some time lambasting the Giants for their 24-6 loss against the Saints. Combined, both New York teams recorded just 296 total yards (83 yards rushing) and six points.

“That’s a half for the Detroit Lions offense,” Ryan said, via ESPN New York.

With so many teams succeeding with backups — Ryan points to the 10-4 Dolphins’ offensive unit playing with three backups and the 9-5 Browns’ starting their fourth quarterback and still winning games — the former Jets coach has run out of excuses.

“You got to look at the coaching. You got to. Like, what is our plan and are we getting the most of our guys?” Ryan continued. “Look, I get it. Our guys can’t bust a grape up front. Saquon Barkley had 14 yards rushing. This is one of the most talented backs in the league; he had 14 yards rushing.

“You know the Jets can’t do anything. They can’t protect the quarterback… I mean, this is an all-time low.”
