The reliever only appeared in seven games for the D-backs, but he posted a 1-0 record.

This article is one of a series of player profiles for the 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks. The club had a fantastic year, winning 84 games to qualify for the playoffs. They made it all the way to Game 5 of the World Series before falling to the Texas Rangers. This past season, the team had 54 players that batted at least once or pitched at least one inning. They are given in reverse order of their aWAR (average WAR-Wins Above Replacement), which is the average of Baseball Reference and Fangraphs WAR. These are their season tales.

Anthony Misiewicz traveled a lot during the 2023 season, as he played for three different teams. He began the season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he played minor relief. Misiewicz spent time with the Reno Aces and the Arizona Diamondbacks, alternating between the two teams.

He got into four games in April, from the 20th to the 29th, having a modicum of success. Over  those four games, he pitched 4.2 innings and allowed just two runs, two walks, and struck out three. His ERA was 3.86 and FIP was 3.26.

After a couple of weeks in Triple-A, the Diamondbacks recalled him on May 12th. He would make just three more appearances with the club. Over those three outings, he pitched 3.1 innings and gave up six hits, three runs, one walk, and three strikeouts. The left-hander had an ERA of 8.10 and a 6.26 FIP. The Diamondbacks saw all they needed to see. Eventually, he was designated for assignment and claimed off of waivers by the Detroit Tigers.

The New York Yankees later claimed Anthony Misiewicz off waivers. He’d spend the rest of the season with them.

Anthony Misiewicz has just over two years of service time and has yet to reach arbitration. If the Yankees hold him through the offseason, he will not be eligible for free agency until 2027. However, the 29-year-old may be moved around between teams until he finds a more permanent home.

2023 Arizona Diamondbacks Reviews: #40, Andrew Chafin

Tigers place reliever Andrew Chafin on restricted list ahead of series vs. Blue Jays

With Arizona: 43 games, 34.1 IP, a record of 2-3, with 8 saves. He had a 4.19 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and a 3.11 FIP. He gave up 3 home runs, walked 48 and struck out 49.

With Milwaukee: 20 games, 17 IP, a record of 1-1, with no saves. He had a 5.82 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and a 5.84 FIP. He gave up 3 home runs, walked 10 and struck out 14.

Chafin was drafted 1-43 by us in the 2011 draft out of Kent State University. He came up as a starter, and his first 3 appearances of his career were starts in 2014. He would be a Dback until the 2020 -farce- season. On August 31 of that year, he was traded to the Cubs for minor league infielder, Ronny Simon. Chafin also had stops in Oakland and Detroit, before signing with us this past offseason. Here is a link to Makakilo’s article profiling Chafin.

If you wondered if he pitched in the playoffs for us in 2017, he did. 13 inning in the WC game and in 2 games in the NLDS for another 13 inning. He managed to give up 2 hits and an earned run.

As mentioned in the dek, Chafin is now the franchises games pitched leader (380). He passed Brad Ziegler (377) on July 22nd against the Cinncinati Reds. He would only have two more appearances before being traded to Milwaukee, including a game where he gave up 5 earned runs to the Cardinals. He finishes his Dbacks tenure (assuming they dont bring him back a third time!) with 380 games, 306 innings, 337 Ks to 135 walks, 19 HRs allowed and a record of 12-15 to go along with 10 saves.

From March 31 to May 5th, he pitched in 15 contests for 12.2 innings. During this stretch, he gave up 3 runs on 8 hits, struck out 21 and walked 5. An ERA of 2.13, opponents batting average of .174 and a FIP of 2.15. He had 5 saves along with a blown save where he was the pitcher of record in a Dback victory against the Royals on April 24th. He came in in relief of Castro in the 8th walked his first batter and gave up a single to the next hitter. Sound familiar? The team rallied to go up 5-4, and Chafin finished the game in the ninth.

His next two games resulted in a blown save and then a loss against the Nationals and Marlins respectively. the next 15 game stretch from May 6th through June 12th saw him give up 5 runs on 15 hits in 11 innings. He had an ERA of 4.09, opponents batting average of .313 and a FIP of 3.07. Fifteen Ks to 5 walks.

The final 13 games he pitched for us this season, June 15th-July 29th, he pitched in 13.2 innings and gave up 8 earned runs on 8 hits. He had 13 Ks to 8 walks, and 6.75 ERA with a FIP of 4.29. Curiously, his opponents batting average was just .211. Seven of those runs were scored in two games, the previously mentioned game against the Cardinals and also a game against the NY Mets on July 5th.

For Milwaukee, he pitched in 20 ballgames… and not very well. He had 17 innings pitched, game up 13 runs (11 earned) on 14 hits. He walked 10 and struck out 14 and gave up 3 long balls… He had 3 home runs allowed in 43 games as a Dback. He had an ERA of 5.82 and a FIP of 5.84 and an opponents batting average of .222. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt so I looked at his game logs. He was scored upon in 6 games and gave up at least 1 base runner in 14 games. August 8th through August 25th, he pitched in 5 games gave up 10 runs on 6 hits, 4 walks and allowed 2 home runs. His ERA was 24.30 and his FIP was 14.36 to go along with an opponent batting average of .375. I am unclear if he was on the Brewers post season roster, but if he was, he did not pitch in the series.
