Before free agency, the Philadelphia Phillies make intriguing decisions on Aaron Nola and Rhys Hoskins.
The Philadelphia Phillies made a pair of contract decisions on SP Aaron Nola and 1B Rhys Hoskins ahead of free agency
In 2023, the qualifying offer is $20.325 million for all players. Nola now has the option of accepting the offer (which he is unlikely to do) and earning $20.325 million in 2024 with the Phillies, or declining the offer and entering free agency with a draft pick linked to him.
Hoskins will enter free agency with no draft pick linked to his name. Heyman did say that Hoskins has a “decent” chance of returning to the Phillies. Wherever Hoskins signs, he’ll most likely be seeking for a one-year deal that will allow him to play well and earn a big multi-year contract the following offseason.
The Philadelphia Phillies are about to enter free agency.
Aside from Nola and Hoskins, Philadelphia does not have many free agents to worry about. A large portion of the team’s core is committed to multi-year contracts.
If Nola leaves, Philadelphia will have to find a replacement. Following a great season with the San Diego Padres, Blake Snell has been suggested as a potential free agent target for the Phillies.
After originally returning as a DH, Bryce Harper began playing first base in 2023. However, Philadelphia still considers him an outfielder. The Phillies would almost certainly be willing to move Harper back to right field in exchange for the return of Hoskins.
Hoskins, a terrific first baseman, may have some rust to shake off after missing the ’23 season. Hoskins’ track record, on the other hand, suggests that he will regain his feet sooner rather than later.
With all of this said, it is evident that the Phillies are a team in flux as free agency approaches. They have come close to winning the World Series the last two years, so they will be aggressive this summer in their pursuit of a title.
