During a new interview, an executive for the New York Mets revealed several players fans should be on the lookout for to be the organization’s next big prospects after Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat.
Like many other New York franchises, the Mets have not been afraid to spend big bucks on adding marquee stars. That is the pro that comes from playing in one of the biggest sports and entertainment markets in the world. This offseason brought the biggest piece of evidence yet when they gave superstar outfielder Juan Soto a record-shattering $765 million contract.
However, while they now have baseball’s richest owner, Steven Cohen has stated publicly over the last year that having one of MLB’s most expensive payrolls every season is not sustainable. That is why he has mandated that his front office and player development department work to turn the team’s minor league system into one of the best in baseball.
While they still have a way to go, the Mets farm system is getting better, and top prospects Brandon Spoat, Drew Gilbert, and Jett Williams are right on the cusp of being on the big league roster in the next year. However, who are the next big-time youngsters who will rise to become elites in the Mets system? That specific question was answered this week by Senior Vice President of Player Development Andy Green during an appearance on the “Meet at the Apple” podcast .
New York Mets exec ranks Jack Wenninger and Nick Morabito among prospects to watch in their system
“I think the next tier that’s sitting in minor league camp that’s not quite ready for major league camp right now, I watched Nolan McLean live yesterday, I know he’s high up on our prospect list,” Green began by saying. “But he’s a guy who didn’t crack major league camp this year. Jack Wenninger, I watched his body completely change this offseason. He’s got a lot of potential inside of him. He’s not someone that’s on the lips of every fan right now.
“And Nick Morabito was our player of the year [at Single-A]. The guy just plays baseball,” he added. “And he did a really night job last year. He’s got a lot of growth opportunities ahead of him which every single guy in the minor leagues does. But he’s the kind of guy I’ll bet on that the wiring and that person to chase down what’s out in front of him. I think we’ll get some exposure to him in big-league camp games as well.”
McLean is ranked in the top 10 of the New York Mets farm system on MLB.com . The right-hander pitched in Double-A last year and posted a 3.78 ERA and struck out 116 batters in 109.2 innings.
Both Morabito and Wenninger are a few years away after playing in Single-A last season. But are both ranked in the top 30 of the club’s system. Morabito, an outfielder, posted a .312 average and .801 on-base plus slugging last year. While Wenninger ended 2024 with a 4.30 ERA he struck out 140 batters in just 115 innings.
