The 49ers Are Having A Massive Exodus This Offseason
On February 11th, 2024, the San Francisco 49ers held a 10-point lead in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs. They would go on to lose that game, but there was a sense of optimism around the future.
Brock Purdy emerged as a top-tier quarterback after being drafted in the seventh round, the Christian McCaffrey trade was an overwhelming success and sever players emerged as stars and key contributors.
In 2024, the 49ers failed to make the playoffs after a season defined by injuries and dysfunction within the locker room. The 49ers have now lost several starters from that team that led the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, and things are set to look very different in San Francisco.
Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group shared a photo of the lineup from Super Bowl 58, crossing out all of the San Francisco players who are no longer with the team.
11 starters from that game are gone including Deebo Samuel, Kyle Juszczyk, Arik Armstead, Chase Young and Charvarius Ward.
Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders earlier this month, while Ward is set to sign with the Indianapolis Colts. Young, a former No. 2 overall pick, just signed a new deal with the New Orleans Saints, while Armstead and Juszczyk were released.

Purdy, McCaffrey and other franchise cornerstones like Trent Williams and Fred Warner are still in San Francisco but we’ll see how long they remain.
The front office – led by CEO Jed York and general manager John Lynch – is reportedly set to exercise more caution with contract decisions after handing out several big deals over the last few years.
The Samuel trade proves that they’re willing to part with highly-regarded players if they feel the cost has exceeded their level of production. Purdy is expected to receive a massive new contract, and we’ll see if the 49ers’ new organization strategy influences the initial offer to their franchise quarterback.
Other top players at the position like Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow have had market-setting deals, and it’s fair to say that Purdy has had the same level of success. Over the next few months, we’ll find out if the 49ers believe he’s worth the same kind of contract.
Risky Decisions and Lingering Success
The San Francisco 49ers have navigated a series of high-stakes moves that would normally jeopardize a team’s stability. Despite questionable trading tactics and the loss of valuable draft capital, the organization has managed to sustain success under the leadership of its head coach, the quarterback, and the seasoned executive overseeing football operations.
Purdy’s Contract Demands
Brock Purdy, instrumental to the team’s recent triumphs, is now seeking a contract that reflects his contributions. A deal worth around $55 million per year. Without the security of a fifth-year option, his request for better compensation underscores the challenges the organization faces in balancing emerging talent with veterans who hold significant value.
Roster Shakeup Amid Financial Constraints
To accommodate Purdy’s improved deal and address various roster needs, the 49ers have been forced to part ways with several players. This restructuring has included departures of key names whose roles were critical in both offense and defense. Additionally, a persistent injury history with a marquee offensive player has magnified the strain on the team’s salary structure and roster depth.
The Impact of Losing a Versatile Veteran
Among the most significant departures is a player who has been a mainstay in the coach’s system. Known for his ability to block, carry the ball, and catch passes, this veteran was more than a positional player; he provided a unique blend of skills across multiple facets of the game. His multifaceted contributions and leadership in the locker room made him an irreplaceable asset during critical moments of play. His loss leaves a noticeable void, particularly during high-pressure situations, and will be difficult to mitigate given the rarity of his skill set.
Finding a New Equilibrium
The current period of transition poses a formidable challenge for the 49ers. Balancing contract negotiations with the need to maintain a competitive roster requires difficult decisions. As the organization parts with several long-standing contributors, the focus shifts to whether the remaining core and emerging talents can bridge the gap left by these departures. The upcoming season will test the resilience of the team’s system and its ability to integrate fresh dynamics while preserving the essence of their attacking style.
